Good news for Thanh Hoa agriculture

Việt NamViệt Nam03/12/2024

Vietnam’s agriculture will no longer be able to compete on the basis of low cost, labor-intensive, and resource-based. Instead, it must shift from agricultural production to an agricultural economy. This is an issue raised at a number of recent conferences and seminars.

Good news for Thanh Hoa agriculture

As a province with a large agricultural area and a large population, how is Thanh Hoa keeping up with this trend?

Discussing at the 37th Provincial Party Executive Committee Conference, term XIX, which just took place, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Van Cuong said that in 2024, Thanh Hoa agriculture had models of conversion from agricultural production to agricultural economy. Specifically, in the field of cultivation, the area of glutinous rice increased by 4,500 hectares over the same period; the area of high-quality rice increased by 2,000 hectares; the area of normal rice decreased by 6,800 hectares. There are 2 enterprises in Thanh Hoa that have had orders to export rice with an output of about 35,000 tons. The output of planted forest wood increased by 13%, meeting the export orders of wood products.

Agricultural production in the direction of doing whatever one likes, passively following the market and being ready to brutally intervene in crops and livestock in an extreme way to achieve immediate goals... has been ingrained in the thinking of farmers for generations. This is a great waste, and also destroys the future. Thanh Hoa province has a large agricultural and rural area, making this waste even greater.

Awakening the potential of land, increasing production value per unit area and focusing on producing high value-added products that the market needs is an important transition for us to leave the agricultural production mindset and enter a larger door with more stringent requirements, which is the agricultural economy, so that farmers are the subject and the proactive person. That is, producers are no longer passively following, the agricultural sector has shifted from having to search for markets to researching the market, to move towards ordered agriculture, as in the spirit of Resolution No. 19-NQ/TW dated June 16, 2022 of the 13th Central Executive Committee on agriculture, farmers and rural areas to 2030, with a vision to 2045: Developing agriculture effectively, sustainably, integrating multiple values in the direction of increasing added value and competitiveness. Strongly shifting the mindset from agricultural production to developing agricultural economy associated with market demand.

Agricultural economic thinking can be understood as the thinking of effectively using limited resources in agriculture to produce products that meet market demands and achieve the highest possible profits. Thanh Hoa agriculture has taken the first steps to catch up with this trend, which is very encouraging. However, in order for Thanh Hoa's agricultural economy to take a clearer shape, in addition to the participation of the agricultural sector, as the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said, it will promote solutions to encourage large-scale production, clean production that meets VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to increase the output of standard raw materials, boost exports; encourage the continued expansion of sugarcane growing areas to meet raw materials for two processing factories; promote linkages in fruit and vegetable production in the direction of linkages to stabilize product output; To effectively control diseases in livestock and poultry, and to ensure the environment and sustainable production in large-scale livestock projects, the authorities must have a systematic strategy for propaganda and training, attracting high-quality human resources, to further accelerate the process of intellectualizing farmers. Because farmers are the subject of agriculture, only when farmers change, will the value of agriculture change.
