On February 7, Prime Minister Olaf Scholz had a one-hour phone call with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
According to the announcement of the German Chancellor's Office, during the phone call, Mr. Cholz congratulated the Syrian people for successfully overthrowing the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Chancellor Scholz and interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa agreed that what is needed now is an inclusive political process that allows all Syrians, regardless of their ethnicity or religion, to participate and enjoy their rights and protections.
Mr. Scholz assured Interim President al-Sharaa that the German government is ready to support the reconstruction of Syria so that it can become a free and safe homeland for all its population groups. The German government will cooperate closely with European and international partners in this regard.
The German leader also stressed the importance of the continued fight against terrorism for security in Syria, as well as for the Middle East and the world.
For his part, interim President al-Sharaa thanked the German Chancellor and her country's stance in supporting and accepting Syrian refugees over the years.
Mr. al-Sharaa presented the roadmap adopted by the Syrian state for the transition period, which includes national dialogue and the formation of an inclusive government, alongside continued efforts to lift economic sanctions.
The two sides shared security challenges in the Middle Eastern country and the need to cooperate to maintain security and stability in the country, while emphasizing support for the Syrian political process and the country's unity, independence and territorial sovereignty.
