Deputy Minister Do Thanh Trung works with the Australian International Agriculture Center

(MPI) - On the afternoon of May 6, 2024, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Do Thanh Trung worked with the Australian Center for International Agriculture (ACIAR) led by Ms. Wendy Umberger, CEO of ACIAR. Also attending the meeting was Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Andrew Goledzinowski.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister Do Thanh Trung welcomed Mr. Andrew Goledzinowski, Ms. Wendy Umberger and members of the delegation who visited and worked at the Ministry of Planning and Investment. At the same time, he highly appreciated the Vietnam - Australia cooperation relationship in general and the cooperation relationship between the Ministry of Planning and Investment and ACIAR in particular. In addition, the two countries have many similarities in development and are currently aiming to develop science, technology and innovation.

Regarding the development of the agricultural sector, Deputy Minister Do Thanh Trung said that Vietnam has identified this as an important field, clearly shown in the Resolutions of the Party Congress as well as in the socio-economic development strategy and plan. In Resolution No. 19-NQ/TW dated June 16, 2022 of the 5th Conference of the 13th Party Central Committee on agriculture, farmers and rural areas to 2030, with a vision to 2045, Vietnam identified agriculture as a national advantage, a pillar of the economy. Developing agriculture effectively, sustainably, integrating multi-value towards increasing added value and competitiveness, associated with promoting the development of processing industry, post-harvest preservation and developing agricultural product markets both domestically and internationally; encouraging the development of green, organic and circular agriculture. Promoting regional and local advantages, organizing agricultural production and business according to value chains, based on science - technology and innovation...

To implement the above Resolution, the Government issued Resolution No. 26/NQ-CP dated February 27, 2023 on the Government's Action Program to implement Resolution No. 19-NQ/TW, in which the Ministry of Planning and Investment was assigned to study and propose solutions to improve the efficiency of resource investment for effective and sustainable agricultural economic development. Accordingly, the Ministry of Planning and Investment hopes that ACIAR will study and provide support related to this content.

Along with that, Vietnam wants ACIAR to research to improve the efficiency of investment resources for agriculture and rural areas; the issue of agricultural product import and export when implementing new generation FTAs; investment policies, organic agricultural development; production to reduce emissions according to international trends; investment policies to improve the initiative in plant and animal varieties to serve the restructuring of the agricultural sector; issues related to sustainable agricultural development.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski and Ms. Wendy Umberger thanked Deputy Minister Do Thanh Trung for taking the time to welcome them and for the information shared. They also highly appreciated the cooperative relationship with the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Ms. Wendy Umberger said that the Ministry of Planning and Investment is an important partner of ACIAR. ACIAR is an organization under the Australian Government's Development Assistance Program to help developing countries achieve sustainable development. ACIAR began its cooperation program in Vietnam in 1993. To date, ACIAR has supported Vietnam in implementing projects, mainly focusing on policy research, including policies related to food security; policies to attract businesses to invest in the agricultural and rural sectors.

Ms. Wendy Umberger expressed her agreement and appreciation for the sharing of Deputy Minister Do Thanh Trung and said that ACIAR always identifies climate as an extremely important issue and in recent times ACIAR has focused on climate change and emission reduction. At the same time, she emphasized that Vietnam is a country with strengths in agricultural development, hoping that development cooperation in this field will achieve even better results in the coming time.

The meeting aimed to evaluate and share new priority areas for cooperation in the coming time of the ACIAR Program in Vietnam and the cooperation priorities of the Ministry of Planning and Investment with the ACIAR Center. On that basis, programs and projects that bring real value will be developed; issues related to the environment and climate will be integrated, ensuring that farmers can withstand climate change./.
