According to the Bangkok Post , on the morning of August 16, President of the Thai National Assembly Wan Muhamad Noor Matha convened a plenary session to elect a new Prime Minister. At the session, Secretary General of the Pheu Thai Party Sorawong Thiengthong nominated Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the sole candidate for Prime Minister of the ruling party coalition.

The voting results showed that Ms. Paetongtarn won 319 votes in favor, 145 votes against and 27 abstentions. To become Prime Minister of Thailand, a candidate needs to receive the support of a majority of the 493 members of the House of Representatives, which is a minimum of 247 votes. However, with this result, Ms. Paetongtarn still needs the approval of King Maha Vajiralongkorn to officially become Prime Minister of Thailand.

Ms. Paetongtarn will be Thailand's youngest Prime Minister and the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold this position after her father, Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, and her aunt, Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra.

Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra was born in 1987, has a bachelor's degree in political science from Chulalongkorn University and a master's degree in international hotel management from the University of Surrey in the UK. She is the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin. She entered politics in 2021 and was one of the three prime ministerial candidates of the Pheu Thai Party in April 2023. She and her husband Pitaka Suksawat currently have a daughter and a son.

The election of Ms. Paetongtarn as Prime Minister of Thailand took place just two days after the Thai Constitutional Court on August 14 issued a ruling to dismiss Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, accusing him of violating the Constitution regarding ethical and integrity standards when appointing cabinet members.

Srettha Thavisin has become the fourth Thai prime minister to be removed from office by the Constitutional Court in 16 years. Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayacha is acting as interim prime minister after Srettha's removal.
