(TN&MT) - On November 13, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) Le Cong Thanh received and worked with Ms. Michaela Baur, Country Director of GIZ Vietnam. The two sides discussed issues related to climate change response, biodiversity conservation, and environmental protection.
Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh noted that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and GIZ have a history of sustainable cooperation in many areas related to environmental protection and climate change response, with a number of projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve water resources management and develop environmental policies. A typical example is the Project to Support Vietnam in Implementing the Paris Agreement (VN-SIPA).
Discussing this project, Ms. Michaela Baur informed that GIZ is currently supporting Vietnam in implementing the Paris Agreement – Phase II (VN-SIPA II) with the Department of Climate Change as the project owner. This is an important initiative, contributing to strengthening national capacity in responding to climate change, especially in areas related to emission reduction and adaptation. This project not only brings benefits in improving the living environment but also creates opportunities for Vietnam to access and deploy green technologies, and improve the capacity of local and central agencies in implementing climate policies.
Highly appreciating this project, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh believes that with effective implementation, the project will support Vietnam in achieving international commitments on climate change, while contributing to building a solid foundation for sustainable development in the future. "The Ministry commits to closely directing relevant agencies to accelerate the appraisal and approval process and closely cooperate with GIZ, ensuring that the project is implemented according to schedule, bringing the highest efficiency", the Deputy Minister affirmed.
Continuing to accompany Vietnam in environmental protection, Ms. Michaela Baur shared about GIZ's support for the ASEAN Urban Solid Waste Management Enhancement Project (AMUSE) led by the Department of Environmental Pollution Control. This is an essential project in the context of rapid urbanization, bringing great value to Vietnam in building an effective waste management system, minimizing the impact of environmental pollution on public health and the ecosystem. "We especially expect that the project will support localities in building waste management capacity and applying advanced solutions in this field," Ms. Michaela Baur expressed.
Given the importance of the AMUSE project, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh said that the Ministry will direct functional units to speed up the appraisal process and coordinate with GIZ to ensure the progress and effectiveness of project implementation, in order to bring positive and sustainable impacts to Vietnam.
On this occasion, the Deputy Minister hopes that GIZ will accompany and connect to share lessons learned, models, and initiatives related to policies to encourage renewable energy development, build carbon markets, and exchange carbon credits.
Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh and Ms. Michaela Baur both agreed to promote the tradition of good cooperation between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and GIZ, and cooperation programs will focus on practical issues, helping Vietnam integrate with developing and developed economies./.
