The above is the speech of new graduate Phan Quang Truong (English language major), with the title of excellent student of the entire course, graduating as valedictorian of the entire course (9.24 points) of Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology at the graduation ceremony this morning, October 16.
Phan Quang Truong's speech in English moved teachers and friends, many of whom shed tears upon learning about Truong's situation.
Despite having to endure the pain of losing his father and mother for 3 years, Phan Quang Truong still achieved many achievements and graduated as valedictorian of his entire class. For Truong, this is a meaningful gift of gratitude to his parents and teachers.
Unlike his peers, Truong lost his father during the Covid-19 pandemic. Three months ago, Truong suffered the pain of losing his mother. There are only two children in the family, but Truong's older sister is married.
"Waking up in the morning or going to work or school at night... I am now alone, forever unable to see my parents' figures or laughter," Truong shared with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters with tears streaming down his face.
Despite such a great loss, Truong did not give up but always told himself to keep going, to live well and study hard because Truong believed that no matter "where" he was, his parents would always watch over him and be proud of him.
In the past, Truong went to school and worked all kinds of part-time jobs such as delivering milk tea, fruit, tutoring, etc. to earn money to cover his living expenses. Because he didn't have as much time as most of his friends, after class, Truong thought of a way to read and record the lectures of the lecturers. While delivering goods, Truong took the opportunity to listen to them many times to remember.
Phan Quang Truong received his diploma from Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology.
In 4 years, the School has had excellent achievements in studying and training. Among them, it was awarded the title of 5 Good Students at the city level in 2023, 5 Good Students at the school level for 3 consecutive years, HUFLIT Talented Student Scholarship, HUFLIT Effortful Student Scholarship, and scholarships from Lazada and Panasonic Companies.
The school also has many impressive achievements in academic competitions such as the encouragement prize in the English Olympic competition for young cadres 2023, the third prize in the National English Olympic competition 2023, the second prize in the English Debate Competition - Star Awards 2023, the first prize in the English Debate Competition - The Sailors 2023.
In particular, the School was also honored to become one of 15 Vietnamese delegates to attend the Vietnam - Singapore Young Leaders Dialogue Program 2024 held at the end of August.
Along with his excellent graduation achievement, Truong was retained by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Information Technology and Foreign Languages as a teaching assistant. "My plan for the next 5 years is to study for a master's degree in Vietnam, then study for a doctorate abroad to become an official lecturer and contribute to the school," the new graduate shared.
Be grateful and give
Phan Quang Truong said he wrote this speech within a week with the desire to share and inspire new graduates.
Truong's speech had both smiles and tears.
Here is part of the speech:
Standing on this stage, four years have passed in the blink of an eye. It has been a journey filled with laughter, tears, triumphs and challenges. But through it all, there is one great lesson that has always been engraved in my heart: the gift of gratitude .
Each person has only one life. Tears flow down, dividing life into two parts. The second life is the life of children, with whom parents are always attached.
Every time we ask our parents what their dreams are, the answer is always that they want us to be happy and do things that make us happy. I am so grateful for their sacrifices, and this is also an inner motivation to push me forward every day and because they taught me a great lesson about compassion when I was very young.
When I was eight years old, my mother took me to a local orphanage to distribute rice, notebooks, pencils and some homemade toys that my mother and I stayed up late to make. This created a loop of Giving . It was an action I could take to help the community, where some people have difficult and miserable lives and their voices are not heard, and they need people who can help to contribute to making their dreams come true.
These people give me the strong will to participate more in volunteer and social activities, where I hope to be able to help them with all that I have and within my ability, where I can listen and talk with them so that no one feels left behind.
Always remember that our success is not only the result of our own efforts, but also a testament to the love and support of those who have accompanied us. Grandparents, parents and relatives have sacrificed countless hours, given countless words of encouragement and overcome countless difficulties to help us achieve our goals. Today, let us remember them and express our deepest gratitude, because time may pass, but the power of sincere appreciation will last forever.
