Today, August 12, in Thanh Hoa City (Thanh Hoa Province), Hanoi Medical University Branch in Thanh Hoa held the closing ceremony of the 2nd medical doctor course (2017 - 2023).
At the ceremony, new doctor Nguyen Tang Lac Long was honored as the valedictorian of the course, one of four new doctors graduating with honors (out of 115 new doctors) of the second course. Surprisingly, sharing with Thanh Nien Newspaper, Long said that his journey to the medical profession began with a failure, which was failing the university entrance exam.
Professor Nguyen Huu Tu, Rector of Hanoi Medical University, awarded the graduation certificate and certificate to the valedictorian of the 2nd course of general medicine at the Hanoi Medical University Branch in Thanh Hoa.
Don't be discouraged by failure
Long is 25 years old this year, a student of Dao Duy Tu High School (Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh), graduated from high school in 2016. During 3 years of high school, Long dreamed of becoming a doctor, like his father. But with the exam result of 22 points for block B, while the general medicine major of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy) that year had a standard score of 26, and Hanoi Medical University had a standard score of 27, Long's journey to his dream of becoming a doctor was far away.
With his parents' support, Long was determined to retake the exam. After some research, Long discovered that Hanoi Medical University had just opened a branch in Thanh Hoa. Because it had just opened, few candidates knew about it, and in the first year of enrollment (2016), the branch had a much lower admission score than the main school. Therefore, in the 2017 enrollment period, Long placed his third choice at Thanh Hoa Branch (the first two choices were at the main school of Hanoi Medical University and Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy).
Thanks to this wish, Long "escaped" the fate of failing the university entrance exam for the second time, when his admission score that year was 27.25. Although he was still "known" as studying at a branch school, the teachers were from Hanoi, and the quality requirements were no different from those of students at the main school.
"The facilities of Thanh Hoa Branch at that time were not as complete as they are now, but the enthusiasm and dedication of the teachers were wonderful. That's why I feel even more fortunate to have set my aspirations here," Long shared.
From average student to class valedictorian
Long said that in his first year of university, he "passed the subjects" quite hard. First of all, it was because he was not very familiar with the university learning style, and secondly, because he did not fully understand the importance of the basic knowledge that a medical student needs to be equipped with, so he was somewhat negligent in his studies.
The subject that made him most tired was physics, his average result at the end of the year was only 6 points. When he was in high school, he only focused on studying block B (math, chemistry, biology), almost ignoring physics, while to study this subject well, students need to have a good background knowledge of general physics.

But in his second year, Long began to excel thanks to finding interest in learning basic subjects. Especially, from his third year, when he went to clinical training at Thanh Hoa General Hospital, Long loved the school and the medical profession even more.
"The teachers (who came from Hanoi to teach) are dedicated to the students. The doctors at the practice hospital are enthusiastic and teach us very meticulously, almost holding our hands and showing us how to do things. That's why I only have one thing in mind: study, study, study..., study really well to become a good doctor in the future," Long confided.
From an average score of 6.9 in the first year, Long made a turning point for himself in the second year when he achieved an average score of 8. In the following years, his academic scores became higher and higher. In the sixth year, Long got 8.67 points. Pulled down by his first year score, his average score for the whole course was only 8.22 points.
Valuable experiences in the medical profession
According to Long, the achievements he has reaped in the past 6 years are not good scores, but lessons in medical ethics, through valuable experiences in clinical classes and internships at the hospital.
Once, while on duty at the Department of Orthopedics and Burns (Thanh Hoa General Hospital), Long was called by the doctors to assist in surgery for a patient who had a traffic accident. A few days later, while studying at the department, Long saw the patient looking for him. When meeting Long, the patient happily said: "I've been looking for you..." It turned out that while being picked up at the hospital, the patient was impressed by Long's affectionate and caring attitude, so he felt confident and grateful, even though he later learned that he was just a student doing an internship.
Another time, also in the Orthopedics and Burns Department, Long was called to assist in a surgery for a traffic accident. The patient was a 20-year-old man whose legs were completely crushed and had to be amputated. When he woke up, the patient was devastated to learn of his situation.
"Because it was the first time I witnessed it, I was stunned by the patient's despair, because I felt helpless in the face of what they were facing. At that time, the doctors who operated on him sat down next to him for a long time to encourage him. This experience helped me understand one thing, a doctor is not simply someone who cures a patient, but also has to have empathy and understanding to be a timely spiritual support for the patient at an important moment," Mr. Long shared.
Long's upcoming plan is to achieve the best results in the residency exam at Hanoi Medical University.
"During my clinical studies at Thanh Hoa General Hospital, I was taught very enthusiastically by the doctors of the Department of Neurosurgery - Thoracic Surgery, so I really admired their skills and passion for the profession, especially Dr. Nguyen To Hoang. Therefore, I dream of becoming a good cardiologist like them," said Mr. Long.
