Song Ma district has more than 900 hectares of early-ripening longan, with an estimated annual output of 10,000 tons of fruit. At this time, cooperatives and longan growing families are focusing on taking care of off-season longan areas to ensure high productivity and quality.
Monitoring the growth and development of the longan garden, preventing pests and diseases, using organic fertilizers to fertilize the plants... are the daily tasks of Mr. Lo Van Thiet, Co village, Chieng Khuong commune, taking care of his family's early-ripening longan area.
Mr. Lo Van Thiet, Co village, Chieng Khuong commune, Song Ma, Son La: "To take care of longan trees to ripen early, we have to be more meticulous in every step, especially in applying science and technology to help longan trees flower and bear fruit at the right time, monitor the growth of the tree to apply fertilizer to achieve the highest quality yield."
At this time, early ripening longan is in the fruit setting stage, cooperatives in the district are propagating and instructing members to ensure water sources for the trees; pruning and removing weak and diseased fruit clusters, thereby helping the tree to concentrate nutrients on healthy clusters, improving fruit development.
Mr. Lo Van Cham, Hoa Muoi Agricultural Cooperative, Chieng Khoong, Song Ma, Son La: “Pruning is very important, the yield of a tree can be up to 2-3 quintals. Without pruning, the fruit will be very thick and the fruit ratio will be very small. If we prune the tree, it will be healthy and produce a new batch of buds. If we prune the bunch, it will have enough nutrients to grow, the fruit will develop evenly and give us a more beautiful product”.
Early ripening longan is harvested in May and June every year, with an average selling price of 40,000 - 60,000 VND/kg, which is 2-3 times higher than the selling price of longan in the main season. Thanks to that, in recent years, Song Ma district has promoted and mobilized people to graft early ripening longan areas, replacing longan trees. Along with that, it is instructing farmers to apply science and technology to early ripening longan production, and strengthening the promotion and introduction of products to consumers.
Mr. Pham Quang Thanh, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Song Ma District, Son La: “Song Ma District has promoted the development of early-ripening longan and off-season longan areas. Strengthening the care of existing longan areas, grafting and improving varieties to increase the value of longan fruit. The Department of Agriculture has advised the District People's Committee to coordinate with specialized agencies to continue to guide and propagate to the people to support production techniques for longan trees to flower and bear fruit in the off-season and in the off-season”.
With the support of professional agencies, along with the initiative of cooperatives and gardeners, this year's early longan crop promises to yield high productivity and quality. People will no longer have to worry about consuming longan products in the main season, contributing to increasing income and promoting the district's economic development./.
