Minister Lee Hsien Loong assessed that the international geopolitical situation is “more tense than ever” with “many uncertainties” awaiting in the new year and the new US administration is a “significant new factor” shaping global issues.
Commenting that Washington's "reluctance to ensure global order" has made "the international environment much less orderly and unpredictable", Mr. Lee said that "Singapore, like all other countries, must adapt to this new reality, even as we strive to maintain close ties and friendship with the United States."
The Lion City needs "a strong and capable government" and "a united people" to survive and thrive in this changing world.
According to the veteran minister, Singapore must continue to make efforts to improve relations with its neighbours amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
He also shared his views on emerging international issues. “The relationship between the US and China remains tense, with fundamental differences unresolved,” while in Europe, the conflict in Ukraine is entering its fourth year. In the Middle East, “there is now a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and some hostages have been released in exchange for prisoners. But the fundamental Palestinian problem remains unresolved—and could get worse.”
While Southeast Asia remains peaceful, Lee Hsien Loong warned that potential flashpoints remain in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.
