Billionaire Musk wants to check the US's $425 billion gold reserves

Billionaire Elon Musk recently raised questions about the status of the estimated $425 billion worth of gold at Fort Knox military base (USA) after more than 50 years.

"Who can confirm that the gold was not stolen from Fort Knox? Maybe it is there, maybe it is not. That gold belongs to the American public. We want to know if it is still there" - billionaire Musk wrote this content on the X platform. His post is raising many speculations about the transparency of the US gold vault, and can strongly impact the global financial market and gold prices.

"It would be great if the public could see what that much gold looks like. After all, it belongs to the people," Musk said in another post.

Following the post, US Senator Mike Lee said he had been denied access to the facility multiple times, and also encouraged billionaire Musk to check out the gold at Fort Knox.

Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, where Fort Knox is located, said in an interview with Fox News that he invited Musk to inspect the gold reserve after being unable to access the facility for a decade. “Some people might think that there shouldn’t be an audit all the time, but to me, the more transparency the better, the more sunlight the better,” Paul said.

ZeroHedgec, a popular financial account, also posted on X: "It would be great if Mr. Musk could check inside Fort Knox to make sure the 4,581 tons of US gold are still there. The last time anyone checked was in 1974."

The United States has the world's largest gold reserves, with more than 8,100 tonnes by the end of 2024, according to the World Gold Council. The bulk of the country's bullion is stored at the Fort Knox complex, with the remainder held at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the mints in West Point and Denver.

However, these reports have failed to quell skepticism, and the strict security policy that bars visitors from the facility has only added to the suspicion. Some lawmakers and social media users have expressed doubts about the accuracy of these figures without a full audit.

The US government has maintained that Fort Knox is safe. But it is unclear whether public pressure will lead to a more thorough internal audit.

It remains unclear whether billionaire Musk will be granted access to the highly secure Fort Knox facility, or whether a comprehensive audit will actually take place as many have hoped.
