Times Square is the worst tourist trap on the planet

Times Square attracts tens of millions of visitors each year.

According to the New York Convention and Visitors Center, the city is expected to welcome about 64.5 million tourists by the end of 2024, of which 81% are domestic visitors and 19% are international visitors. This number is only a few million less than the record of 66.6 million visitors in 2019 (pre-pandemic period).

Most visitors to New York say they will definitely walk through Times Square at least once. However, according to the results of a new survey, visitors should be prepared because not everyone will like the place, according to the New York Post .

Specifically, online language learning platform Preply analyzed visitor reviews of 81 iconic tourist destinations around the world to find out how much they love or hate each place.

Among them, Times Square is the most negatively rated, earning the shameful title: the worst "tourist trap" in the world.

The study was conducted using two popular review platforms. After selecting a list of popular attractions, the team further narrowed the selection to only those locations that had received more than 1,000 reviews.

The reviews were then further analyzed to filter out places associated with negative words like “terrible,” “overrated,” and “tourist trap.”

According to researchers, Times Square is one of the most visited places on the planet with more than 50 million visitors each year.

However, reviewers complained that the place was too "crowded", "dirty" and "boring".

"The path is too crowded, impassable, too tiring to visit and sightsee," said a tourist.

"The higher the hope, the greater the disappointment," said another.

The study comes as Times Square faces dark times amid rising street crime and a drop in retail sales due to the pandemic. The results threaten the street’s reputation as a modern, vibrant, and safe destination.

In addition, the ranking also listed a number of other places that disappointed tourists such as Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin (Germany), Eiffel Tower in Paris (France), Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles (USA), Blue Lagoon in Iceland and Las Ramblas walking street in Barcelona (Spain)...
