On February 18, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani and Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar signed an agreement to officially upgrade the relationship to a Strategic Partnership in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani at the Prime Minister's Office in New Delhi.

The two sides also signed an agreement on the Amended Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and Prevention of Tax Evasion in Relation to Income Tax and exchanged several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) focusing on trade, energy, investment, innovation, technology, food security, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

Following high-level talks between Indian Prime Minister Modi and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim, Doha also officially pledged to invest $10 billion in New Delhi, marking an important milestone in promoting bilateral economic relations.

A joint statement from the Indian Prime Minister's Office said Qatar welcomed New Delhi's efforts to create a conducive environment for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Foreign Institutional Investment (FII).

This reflects Qatar's strong commitment to supporting India's economic development, especially in the areas of infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, food security, logistics and hospitality.

During the talks, the two leaders also set a target of doubling bilateral trade turnover to 28 billion USD within the next 5 years. In particular, the two sides also discussed the possibility of signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which will open up opportunities for deeper cooperation in the future.

Currently, trade turnover between India and Qatar is estimated at about 14 billion USD per year. With new investment commitments, leaders of the two countries expect to further promote bilateral economic relations in the coming time.

The Emir of Qatar arrived in New Delhi on the evening of February 17 and was welcomed by Prime Minister Modi at Indira Gandhi International Airport. This is the second visit of Emir Al Thani to India, after his first visit in 2015.
