Former President Donald Trump was playing golf at his Florida estate on September 15 when the US Secret Service spotted the muzzle of a gun protruding from the bushes along the golf course, about 400 yards (366 m) away. They fired at the gunman, who fled, leaving behind his equipment, including a GoPro action camera. He was later arrested.
Key points surrounding the assassination of Mr. Trump
After an agent fired at the attacker, he dropped the rifle and fled in an SUV, according to the FBI. He left behind an AK-47 assault rifle, two backpacks, a GoPro camera and a scope used for targeting. He was arrested in a neighboring county.
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told media that after his arrest, the man appeared calm and did not show much emotion, nor did he ask questions like "what's going on?"

Mr Trump appeared unfazed by the assassination attempt. He said he was safe and well. He also asserted that “nothing can slow me down”.
"There have been gunshots near me, but before the rumors start to spread out of control, I want you to hear this first: I am safe and well," he wrote in an email to his supporters. He then returned to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, where he lives.
Mr Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the incident. The White House said it was “relieved” that Mr Trump was safe. Ms Harris, Mr Trump’s rival in the November presidential election, condemned “political violence”, saying “violence has no place in America”.
Fox News host Sean Hannity recounted on air his conversation with Trump and the former president’s golfing buddy, Steve Witkoff. They told the reporter that they were on the fifth hole and about to tee off when they heard the explosion. Within seconds, Secret Service agents “pounced” on Trump and “shielded” him to protect him.

Several law enforcement officials were quoted as saying the man arrested was identified as Ryan Wesley Routh. The FBI is investigating the assassination. CNN sources said authorities are working to obtain a warrant to search social media accounts believed to be associated with the suspect.
The source added that some of the online activity suspected to have been conducted by Routh also involved the use of platforms headquartered outside the United States, so this would involve the FBI working with international partners to determine everything possible about the individual in custody.
The suspect's son, Oran Routh, revealed that his father was not a violent person. Oran Routh does not believe his father owned a gun. He told the Daily Mail that this was the first time he had heard of the assassination attempt on Mr Trump and he did not believe his father was responsible for the incident.
Former President Trump's golf match on September 15 was a last-minute addition to his schedule, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Trump had no public events scheduled for the day.
