(CLO) US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will cooperate with California Governor Gavin Newsom to extinguish wildfires in Los Angeles, after previously proposing to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“We’re trying to figure out how to solve the problem, and the best way to do it is to run the state together. They’re going to need a lot of federal help,” Trump told reporters.

Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised California's handling of wildfires this month, which have caused widespread damage, with three major blazes still threatening the region.

Governor Newsom, a Democrat who has had a tense relationship with Mr Trump, has insisted that California needs help from the federal government.

Earlier, during a visit to North Carolina to survey the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in September, Mr. Trump announced that he would sign an executive order to reform or abolish FEMA, the main agency responsible for responding to natural disasters in the US. He said that instead of FEMA, states should be directly funded to manage disasters themselves.

“FEMA has failed,” Mr. Trump said as he toured the area affected by Hurricane Helene, where trees were downed and homes were badly damaged. “I think FEMA should be eliminated.”

He has accused Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of being “irresponsible,” and his allies in Congress have threatened to cut disaster aid to the state.

Mr Trump also repeated his accusation that Mr Newsom had refused to send water from northern California to fight the fires. In fact, many fire hydrants in the wealthy Pacific Palisades area have run dry due to a prolonged drought, hampering firefighting efforts. Local officials have pledged to investigate the incident.

FEMA currently has 10 regional offices with more than 20,000 employees across the United States, providing emergency relief and post-disaster recovery. As extreme weather events become more frequent, FEMA’s budget has grown to meet the demand.
