(CLO) In the context of the global press witnessing the decline of print newspapers, many long-standing newspapers have to reduce their scale or stop printing, local print newspapers in Vietnam still maintain a certain position. This does not mean that local print newspapers do not face challenges, on the contrary, they have been and are making strong changes to adapt to the new situation.
It is not uncommon for newspapers to downsize, reduce circulation, or even stop printing. The rise of the Internet and social media has changed the way people consume information, causing print newspapers to increasingly lose their monopoly.
Recently, two long-standing New York newspapers, the Star-Ledger and The Jersey Journal, officially ceased print publication, a clear demonstration of the decline of local journalism across the United States.
However, in that context, local print newspapers in Vietnam have a different story. They not only "survive" but also maintain a certain position in the hearts of readers. Nghe An Newspaper and Tuyen Quang Newspaper have their own stories in maintaining and developing print publications.
Turn newspaper into luxury document
Sharing about the current situation of operations at his editorial office, Mr. Ngo Duc Kien - Editor-in-Chief of Nghe An Newspaper said that Nghe An Newspaper focuses on distribution, assigning staff to closely monitor and promptly grasp fluctuations in the number of distributions at each facility to have timely handling and urging measures. "Strict implementation of Directive 11 of the Politburo on purchasing and using Party newspapers is an important basis for Party organizations to enhance their responsibility in using Party newspapers" , Editor-in-Chief Ngo Duc Kien said.

Mr. Ngo Duc Kien emphasized that multi-platform and multimedia journalism is being focused on development, while at the same time, printed newspapers are still receiving worthy investment. Articles are carefully invested in and ordered from leading experts to ensure the quality and value of content.
"We focus on enhancing the value of printed publications, turning the newspaper into a luxurious, important and professional document. The phenomenon of 'printed newspaper sales', especially Tet issues, often occurs, showing the appeal of printed newspapers to readers."
The Nghe An Newspaper’s 2025 Spring issue is a prime example of the phenomenon of ‘printed newspaper shortages’. The publication delves into stories highlighting influential historical figures in the province. This initiative, led by Editor-in-Chief Ngo Duc Kien, connects with readers on a deeper level by highlighting stories that resonate with current identities and values.
“These stories should not simply recount historical events,” Kien explains. “They should offer fresh perspectives that are relevant to contemporary society.”
Editor-in-Chief Nguyen Duc Kien cited an article about President Ho Chi Minh - the most noble figure in Vietnamese history. The article focuses on President Ho Chi Minh's role in gathering the intellectual class and promoting national unity, connecting with the present time.
"By looking at how President Ho Chi Minh gathered intellectuals, we can draw valuable lessons for the ongoing national renewal revolution led by General Secretary To Lam," said Mr. Kien.

The investment is not only reflected in the content but also in the presentation. Nghe An Newspaper has chosen a reputable printing house, ensuring sharp print quality, vivid colors and durability of the publication.
The journalism team is also professionally built, from designers, artists, editors to secretaries. Each position has strict requirements for expertise, experience and responsibility. The smooth coordination between departments creates a quality printed newspaper production process.
Unleash value from in-depth writing
Faced with increasing competition from digital media, Tuyen Quang print publications are also proactively reinventing themselves. This reinvention effort focuses on providing in-depth, specialized content while enhancing the visual appeal of their print editions.
"To meet the ever-growing needs of our readers, we have embraced innovation and creativity in both content and presentation ," affirmed Mai Duc Thong, Editor-in-Chief of Tuyen Quang Newspaper. "Our commitment is to create high-quality, engaging journalism that serves as an important bridge between the Party, the government and the people."

A key adjustment is the shift towards more in-depth, specialized articles and series. Instead of providing superficial overviews of various issues, the newspaper now focuses on in-depth analysis of topics that resonate with the community. Breaking news and topical information are disseminated effectively through digital platforms, ensuring readers have access to the latest updates.
The print edition has also undergone a visual transformation. The traditional text-heavy format has been replaced by a modern, eye-catching design and a rich array of visual elements. The decision to print the entire weekend edition in color is a prime example of Tuyen Quang Newspaper’s commitment to improving its presentation – a move that has been well received by readers.
"Weekend editions often have lighter content, focusing on lifestyle, providing readers with relaxation and valuable information," Mr. Mai Duc Thong shared.
To increase reader interaction and keep up with technology trends, Tuyen Quang Newspaper also integrates QR codes on its printed publications. QR codes are used to provide additional information, connect to digital platforms and create convenience for readers. QR codes also lead readers to the newspaper's websites and social networks, helping to increase interaction and expand the newspaper's reach.
Editor-in-Chief Mai Duc Thong said Tuyen Quang Newspaper remains dedicated to its core mission of disseminating the province's political agenda and the policies of the Party and State. "The newspaper acts as an important bridge between the local government and the people, reflecting the concerns and aspirations of the community to policy makers and clarifying development plans to the public," Thong stressed.
Tuyen Quang Weekend publication is designed in a modern, eye-catching style with articles that reflect the breath of life, attracting many readers.
To attract young readers, Mr. Thong said, Tuyen Quang Newspaper provides specialized columns covering topics of interest to young people. The publication also cooperates with the Provincial Youth Union to widely distribute Tuyen Quang Newspaper to young people, ensuring that the young generation has proactive and effective access to information.
Dual strategy of digital growth and revenue diversification
In a challenging media landscape, Tuyen Quang Newspaper and Nghe An Newspaper have also demonstrated financial resilience and growth through a combination of strategic initiatives, including diversified revenue streams and impactful community events.
“While provincial funding remains the foundation of Tuyen Quang Newspaper’s operations, we have proactively sought and developed additional revenue streams, demonstrating significant growth,” said Mai Duc Thong. “This financial diversification is critical to the long-term sustainability of the Newspaper and allows us to further invest in quality journalism.”
Livestreaming major events has become a trademark of Tuyen Quang Newspaper.
Mr. Thong highlighted the newspaper's success in expanding its revenue base. "Compared to previous years, our revenue generation capacity has increased significantly. We have established a viable income stream from digital platforms including Facebook and Tiktok, both of which have achieved green ticks with large followings. Career revenue also shows steady growth year on year, from VND1.5 billion in 2020 to over VND3 billion in 2024."
In addition to traditional revenue models, Tuyen Quang Newspaper has strategically leveraged community engagement through hosting high-profile events. "We have successfully socialized funding for our events, allowing us to carry out impactful initiatives such as the Dien Bien Phu - Ban Hung Ca Gala and the 2024 Dau An Gala at the end of the year. In addition, with our strength in livestreaming major events, we not only generate revenue but also strengthen our connection with the community," Mr. Thong shared.
Nghe An Newspaper is continuously in the top of the local Party newspapers with the highest number of visitors.
Sharing about revenue, Editor-in-Chief of Nghe An Newspaper Ngo Duc Kien said that currently the Newspaper implements a mechanism of 3/4 self-financing. With traditional partners, Nghe An Newspaper determines the motto of 'serving partners, bringing benefits to both sides'. This does not mean protecting the wrong but advising and supporting partners to solve problems, especially media crises.
In the context of increasing revenue from non-traditional partners, Nghe An Newspaper focuses on attracting partners with large scale and resources. To do that, the newspaper has prioritized enhancing its overall value, especially in the digital field.
This commitment to digital excellence has seen Nghe An Newspaper recognised as an ‘excellent digital transformation unit’ by the Ministry of Information and Communications. The newspaper’s online platforms also boast top rankings in terms of traffic and user engagement, rivalling even national publications.
“Our goal is to demonstrate tangible value to potential partners. We want them to clearly see the return on their investment when they cooperate with us,” Mr. Ngo Duc Kien emphasized.
Mr. Kien said that Nghe An Newspaper effectively exploits digital platforms through specific plans, meeting the diverse needs of readers. To achieve this, Nghe An Newspaper proactively works directly with digital platforms, while also cooperating with major technology partners. Choosing strong and professional external partners is a key factor for the sustainable development of Nghe An Newspaper's digital platforms.
"Nghe An Newspaper is committed to building a responsible and ethical journalism environment, prioritizing integrity and positive contributions to society. This commitment is not only reflected in the content of the articles but also extends to employee welfare, creating healthy working conditions and supporting the professional development of the team," said Editor-in-Chief Ngo Duc Kien.
