In Thanh Khe district, according to the inspection of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Da Nang City and the records of the Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company, there is a situation of wastewater flowing into the sea at the outlet at the end of Ton That Dam Street. In Son Tra district, Man Thai beach and the outlet opposite the Mobile Training Company in Son Tra district also have wastewater flowing into the sea. The two outlets in this area are currently storing wastewater, causing a foul smell and discomfort for tourists.
Wastewater discharged directly into the sea in Son Tra district, Da Nang city
Similarly, in Ngu Hanh Son district, there are currently three wastewater discharge outlets that overflow into the sea: one at the resort on Truong Sa Street, one opposite Nguyen Duc Thuan Street, and one near the resort on Vo Nguyen Giap Street. These outlets also have stagnant water. Wastewater discharged into the sea at these locations all cause a strong stench. On hot days, wastewater discharged into the sea further aggravates the pollution at tourist beaches.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Duc, Deputy Director of Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company, said that the drainage system in Da Nang is characterized by collecting wastewater together with rainwater. At this time, the reopening of coastal hotels has overloaded the wastewater collection system. This has led to wastewater being discharged into the sea even though the weather is hot and there is no rain.
Currently, the Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company is taking measures to minimize the above situation. The company has workers leveling and building sand dams at the above-mentioned discharge gates to prevent wastewater from flowing into the sea, and at the same time organizing the maximum operation of the pump capacity at the discharge gates. However, the large amount of wastewater at some peak times causes it to overflow into the sea.
According to Ms. Duc, these projects are being implemented and not yet completed. Of which, the Eastern environmental improvement project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 but has not yet been handed over. Currently, the Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company is waiting to receive the handover of these projects to connect to the wastewater collection system.
Da Nang City has invested in two coastal wastewater treatment projects, including the Eastern environmental improvement project (Son Tra district), with a total investment of more than VND 1,440 billion, and the project to build drainage works along Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts, with a budget of VND 2,450 billion. Only when the two projects are operational can the situation of wastewater discharged into the sea be completely resolved.
