Although it is still more than a month until the Lunar New Year 2025, the red grapefruits uniquely shaped like gold bars with the words Tai - Loc have been almost sold out at the garden with prices ranging from 450,000 to 500,000 VND/fruit.

Dong Cao village, Trang Viet commune, Me Linh district (Hanoi) is considered the only locality in Hanoi that has a unique "royal" red grapefruit variety.

img

The special thing is that red grapefruit is very strange and unique. When young, it is green, when old, it is yellow, and when ripe, it turns into a smooth, beautiful red color. Inside the grapefruit, the grapefruit segments are peach-pink, each segment is plump, and the grapefruit flavor is mild and not bitter.

In recent years, red grapefruit has become a key crop bringing high economic value to local households.

The red grapefruit growing model brings in billions of dong in income, helping to improve people's lives and opening up a new direction for economic development in the locality.

Mr. Luong Van Phuong - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dong Cao Red Grapefruit Cooperative said that the origin of Dong Cao red grapefruit dates back to more than 100 years ago, planted by his father, Mr. Luong Van Vy, before he was born.

Usually, around the 8th lunar month, the grapefruit turns from green to yellow, and tastes a bit sour. The whole family picks the grapefruit to sell, leaving a few to cut and worship during Tet.

img

Seeing the strange grapefruit variety with beautiful color and red flesh, he started grafting branches and planting them all over his garden. Many other local households also came to ask for seeds to plant and sell the fruit during Tet.

To avoid fruit drop, when the tree has fruit for about 1 month, the gardener will start wrapping the fruit in paper bags to avoid frost and sucking insects.

img

From an old grapefruit tree left by his father, Mr. Phuong has multiplied it into 1,500 grapefruit trees planted in his garden. Of these, about 40-50 trees are over 30 years old; more than 100 trees are over 20 years old, and the rest are in their 5th year.

img

The entire Dong Cao red grapefruit cooperative has about 20 members. In previous years, it provided about 5,000-6,000 red grapefruits for Tet with prices ranging from 80,000-100,000 VND/fruit. Grapefruits shaped like gold bars with the words Tai - Loc cost 250,000-300,000 VND/fruit.

However, this year, due to the impact of storm No. 3 in September, about 60% of the red grapefruit growing area was affected, causing billions of dong in damage.

img

"After the historic storm, my grapefruit garden lost 60% of its yield, equivalent to nearly 2 billion VND. Floodwaters flooded the garden, causing almost all the grapefruit to fall. About 90% of the shaped grapefruits were lost, out of more than 3,000 grapefruits, now there are only nearly 100 shaped red grapefruits left," said Mr. Phuong.

img

After 3 months, the traces of the historic flood are still not gone.

img

Due to the limited supply, the price of red grapefruit is skyrocketing this year. The price of red grapefruit usually increases from 80,000 to 100,000 VND/fruit (buying price at the garden), while shaped red grapefruit is twice as expensive at 450,000 - 500,000 VND/fruit.

Despite the poor harvest, Mr. Phuong's red grapefruit garden is still "sold out", currently 80% has been sold to traders, only 20% left for loyal customers who still order every year.
