At the funeral, Ms. Nguyen Lan - artist Nguyen Anh Vu's sister - sadly said goodbye: "My brother - writer, poet, screenwriter Nguyen Anh Vu has left this world after more than a month of struggling with the strange disease interstitial pneumonia.

In his hospital bed, despite having to fight for every precious drop of oxygen, my brother never lost his desire to live. He still wrote, drew, composed and even designed food menus in his rare moments of lucidity.

Writer Vo Thi Xuan Ha has known screenwriter Nguyen Anh Vu since 2007, because he often visited her book cafe. "I really don't know whether to call Nguyen Anh Vu a writer or a poet, a playwright or a painter, Vu is even a stage drama backdrop director. For many years, Nguyen Anh Vu participated in the Young Poetry Stage of the Vietnam Writers Association at the Temple of Literature as a director, MC and directly performed his own poems," the female writer expressed.

She affirmed that Nguyen Anh Vu has not written many stories, but every story that is published leaves an impression, and makes readers "keep forever the lingering flavor somewhere of blocks of time, space, and memories, flavors that are full of the pure, primitive scent".

Writer Uong Trieu also commented that artist Nguyen Anh Vu is a very talented and elegant person. "Vu writes little but very meticulously and impressively," writer Uong Trieu expressed.

Writer Do Bich Thuy is a close friend of screenwriter Nguyen Anh Vu. She said the last messages between the two on social media were sent on the evening of October 7. In his final words, Nguyen Anh Vu said: "I really look forward to the day I can come back." Less than 48 hours later, he passed away.

"Vu and I have so many memories that I could not imagine having to remember so painfully in these days. Too soon, Vu! Too soon for me to sit there numb knowing that you had succumbed to fate yesterday afternoon," wrote writer Do Bich Thuy.

She said that screenwriter Nguyen Anh Vu is an easy-going person. During his business trips, he is given whatever he wants to eat, wherever he goes, whether he is poor or dirty or muddy, it doesn't matter. As long as he can go, see, be amazed, and feel strange.

Writer Do Bich Thuy also revealed that her close friend loves to dress up, taking care of her clothes and fashion accessories. "Not many people know that for more than a month now, Vu has been lying quietly in a hospital bed. Occasionally, he is turned over to pat his back. Vu is alone in there, 24/7 with an oxygen tube over his face, not allowing anyone to visit him. Vu's daily posting on Facebook must be a form of mental therapy with the hope of returning home soon," writer Do Bich Thuy lamented.

The romantic has left Hanoi

Colleagues call Nguyen Anh Vu "Hanoi's romantic" because of his intense and undying love for this place. Journalist Ngo Ba Luc said that 8 years ago, he and screenwriter Nguyen Anh Vu often interacted on social networks.

"Vu likes me because he still retains the rustic qualities of a country person, and I like Vu because he loves Hanoi in the way of a sophisticated, discreet and profound Hanoian. When he knew I wrote the book Wind in the Fields, Vu texted me to offer to illustrate the book, and I immediately agreed. Vu's paintings are not grand and flashy, but the strokes in each painting truly have soul and spirit, just like the state of the characters in the story, even though they are just dotted strokes," confided Mr. Ngo Ba Luc.

Artist Nguyen Anh Vu's sister said that living in the world of literature is the most wonderful thing her brother has in the world of bare reality.

"The Hanoian quality in Vu is also revealed in a subtle and haunting way through the essays he wrote about Hanoi and old dishes. And it must be admitted that my parents, me and the children are the ones who directly enjoy the authentic dishes coming from his works.

He puts his love into every onion, every bowl of dipping sauce, every garlic flavor, every vegetable flavor... He bustles around mixing, cooking, and bringing hot, fragrant dishes to every diner in the family with eyes filled with love," Ms. Nguyen Lan expressed.
