Although teachers have organized extra classes at home, many parents still think that if they do not let their children take extra classes, it will be difficult to achieve high academic results in exams.
Since his child entered 6th grade, Mr. Bui Kieu Hung (37 years old, Gia Lam, Hanoi) and his wife have registered him for extra classes in 3 main subjects: Math, Literature, and English. 3 classes a week, regularly for the past 4 years, Mr. Hung, regardless of the weather, urges and picks up his child every day. Since starting extra classes, he has seen his child's results improve significantly.
"The proof is that in the recent 10th grade entrance exam, my son got good results, enough points to get into a top school, and was even in the top of his class," said Mr. Hung, adding that if he didn't take extra classes, his son would have had difficulty achieving this result.

According to the male parent, the new textbooks are quite heavy and teachers often do not have enough time to teach them all in class. Only good students can keep up, while slow learners are forced to attend extra classes.
On the other hand, parents generally feel more secure when sending their children to a teacher's home to study, because the teacher who teaches in class every day understands the students' abilities best, making it easy to help them improve.
"My child takes extra classes, even though it costs a bit of money, but in return he gets good results. If he doesn't take extra classes, it will affect his future. I often tell him that he can take any subject he wants to take, wherever he wants to take it, I don't mind taking him to and from school, as long as his academic performance improves," said Mr. Hung.
Ms. Vu Thuy Hien (41 years old, Long Bien, Hanoi) regularly takes her 5th grade son to extra classes 3 times a week. Although her son is quite good at studying, in reality, to compete with his classmates, he still needs to make a lot of effort.
Ms. Hien and her husband are both businessmen, busy with trading, and do not have enough knowledge to tutor their children, so the family considers sending their children to extra classes the most suitable and effective.
"My child's homework is quite a lot and difficult, just studying at school is not enough. I want my child to take extra classes to have a better grasp of knowledge, to learn more advanced lessons. Especially taking extra classes at the homeroom teacher's house, the family is more assured about the quality" - she said and added that this year my child will also take the entrance exam to high-quality secondary schools, so extra classes are very necessary.
Agreeing with Mr. Hung and Ms. Hien, Ms. Ngo Thi Men (44 years old, Nam Dinh) said that everyone wants their children to achieve high results in exams, and the only way to do that is to study more to improve their qualifications. Parents cannot teach their children at home because knowledge is different from time to time.
"If I don't let my child attend extra classes, I'm afraid it will be difficult for him to get high scores and compete for admission to prestigious schools," said Ms. Men, emphasizing that not all students are truly self-motivated to study, so they need teachers to tutor them.
Before the news that the Ministry of Education and Training tightened regulations on extra classes, these parents all expressed concern that if they did not take extra classes, their children would not be able to achieve high results in their studies, exams, and would not be able to keep up with the curriculum in class.

From a teacher’s perspective, Ms. Le Thu Ha (a Math teacher in Hanoi) said that parents generally want the best for their children and want them to achieve the best results. It is understandable that parents invest a lot of money and spare no effort in taking their children to school.
However, too much extra study is not necessarily good. Sometimes what parents think is good will create invisible pressure that makes children afraid to study.
Looking at the current new education program, Ms. Ha also hopes that in addition to extra classes, parents should guide their children to cultivate other areas of life skills according to their passions and interests such as sports, arts, etc. to promote students' talents.
"Extra classes take place at all levels for many different purposes and reasons. Investing in students' education is important, but students should only take extra classes if they have clear goals. For example, the goal is to learn a new language that they are interested in, or life skills courses... It is necessary to observe, understand and listen to the thoughts and wishes of the children," said the female teacher.
Circular 29/2024 of the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates cases where extra teaching and extra teaching are not allowed, including:
- Do not organize extra classes for primary school students, except in the following cases: art training, physical education, and life skills training.
- Teachers who are teaching at schools are not allowed to teach extra classes outside of school for money from students that the teacher is assigned to teach by the school according to the school's educational plan.
- Teachers at public schools are not allowed to participate in the management and operation of extra-curricular teaching but can participate in extra-curricular teaching.
