The 2025 spring festival season is taking place in many localities across the country, attracting a large number of tourists. However, food services during the festival season are seasonal, not fully invested, unprofessional and often have many individual businesses that do not meet the necessary requirements for food safety.

This poses a potential risk of food insecurity and food safety incidents can occur at all stages of the food chain, especially in localities where festivals are held and where large crowds gather.

According to the Department of Food Safety, Ministry of Health, the risk of food insecurity can still occur at all stages of the food supply chain and in all localities, especially in areas where large festivals are held, where large numbers of participants gather.

Faced with that situation, the Food Safety Department has requested the Health Departments of provinces and centrally-run cities, the Food Safety Department of Ho Chi Minh City, the Food Safety Management Board of Da Nang City and Bac Ninh Province to strengthen inspection, examination and supervision of food safety at food production and trading establishments serving festivals, especially large establishments and festival areas, tourist areas and historical sites.

Food service establishments must strictly comply with food safety regulations, including ensuring facilities, food processing equipment, and training staff to avoid the risk of food poisoning. In particular, these establishments must closely inspect and monitor input materials and food processing procedures.

Food service establishments during the festive season must ensure the conditions of facilities, equipment and human resources according to the provisions of the Food Safety Law. Specifically, the establishments must have spacious locations, ensure hygiene and have a safe distance from sources of pollution.

In addition, the facility must have adequate equipment to handle raw materials, process, preserve and transport food without causing contamination. Employees directly involved in food production must be trained in food safety and free of infectious diseases.

A representative of the Food Safety Department said that establishments violating food safety regulations will be strictly handled according to Decree No. 115/2018/ND-CP.

Violations, such as using ingredients of unknown origin, using expired or unsanitary food, will be fined from 1 million to 3 million VND for individuals and double that for organizations.

In particular, serious acts such as not performing three-step food inspection, not keeping food samples or not ensuring hygiene during food processing will be fined from 3 million to 5 million VND.

In the context of the 2025 spring festival season, the Ministry of Health has requested local authorities to strengthen inspections and surprise inspections of food production and trading establishments.

This is to ensure food safety during the festival, protect people's health and avoid food poisoning incidents. The Ministry of Health also requires these agencies to strictly handle violating establishments and resolutely suspend the operations of establishments that do not meet food hygiene and safety requirements.

It is known that during the 9-day Lunar New Year holiday, the whole country recorded 710 emergency cases due to digestive disorders, home-cooked food poisoning and alcohol intoxication, of which 438 cases had to be hospitalized for monitoring and treatment. This once again affirms the necessity of maintaining monitoring and handling food safety incidents.

The Ministry of Health has also requested that authorities continue to strictly implement food safety guidelines during the Lunar New Year and spring festivals in 2025, while stepping up communication on food safety and food poisoning prevention.

Ensuring food safety during the spring festival season not only helps protect public health but also raises public awareness in complying with food safety and hygiene regulations.

Authorities need to continue to maintain inspection, supervision and strictly handle violations, ensuring the 2025 spring festival season is safe, joyful and healthy for all people.
