Considered a remote area with beautiful and diverse natural landscapes, still retaining relatively strong indigenous cultural features, not yet affected by urbanization. Quang Ninh provincial leaders have a policy of developing a green economy in Binh Lieu, focusing on developing a green tourism model. This is a significant breakthrough for economic development in the ethnic minority community of Binh Lieu, including the Dao Thanh Phan ethnic group.
Binh Lieu has a natural terrain of mainly high hills and mountains with majestic natural waterfalls, such as Khe Van, Khe Tien, and Song Mooc. The terraced fields in the ripe rice season are called “golden carpets”.
Stretching across the deep green undulating mountain ranges are fragrant anise and cinnamon forests... creating a picturesque landscape. Binh Lieu is focusing on building models to preserve cultural values for ethnic minorities in the area, including the Thanh Phan Dao people, such as the Dao cultural village in Vo Ngai commune and Dong Van commune, gradually forming unique accommodation facilities and community tourism spots (homestays).
Along with that, Binh Lieu district has developed 7 groups of specialized tourism products to bring interesting experiences to tourists: discovery tourism, cultural identity tourism, experiencing festivals and holidays in the area... Thereby, exploiting the potential and strengths of local tourism, creating conditions for tourists to have the opportunity to experience the community activities of ethnic people.
The Dao people in Binh Lieu have another name, the Man people, including Dao Thanh Phan and Dao Thanh Y. The most populous Dao Thanh Phan people in Binh Lieu are in Dong Van commune. They live in villages at the foot of the mountain or along the mountainside, near the water for convenience in living and farming. Surrounding the Dao villages are the green of the immense mountains and forests, covered with clouds all year round, the sound of waterfalls creating a poetic scene. There are years when the weather is cold, ice and snow appear in the villages of the Dao Thanh Phan (such as Phat Chi, Phai Lau, Dong Van commune). The entire Dao village and the mountain and forest landscape are immersed in white ice and snow, similar to the villages in Sa Pa (Lao Cai). The Dao Thanh Phan people have cultivated terraced fields for a long time. They have cleared the high mountains into long fields, one after another, creating a special, impressive feature in the immense mountain and forest landscape. The majestic terraced fields that have been cultivated by locals for many years, such as in Song Mooc A, Song Mooc B, Khe Tien (Dong Van commune), Cao Thang, Khe O (Luc Hon commune) villages... are also considered attractive tourist destinations.
Regarding traditional culture in house architecture, Binh Lieu district has encouraged the Thanh Phan Dao people to preserve their ancient rammed earth houses. If there is a new construction, the district encourages people to build in the traditional style of houses to be able to develop homestay services to welcome tourists. Through homestay tourism services, the traditional cultural characteristics of the Dao people are also preserved such as: cuisine with unique dishes such as pork cooked with ginger, pork cooked with banana trees, stir-fried pho..., from folk knowledge about the secret of curing diseases with natural leaves, people have formed services such as steam bath, herbal bath of the Dao people...
Since 2017, Binh Lieu has had a Steering Committee to establish a tourism club in Dong Van commune, Binh Lieu district to promote the intangible cultural values of the Thanh Phan Dao people, especially the heritage of folk music and art. Accordingly, establishing art clubs, restoring and collecting folk art of the Thanh Phan Dao people such as the Pa Dung singing tune, dances, trumpet blowing... both serve the conservation work and are a form of activity to serve tourists to learn about the culture and art of the indigenous people. Binh Lieu district advocates promoting the unique customs and festivals of the Thanh Phan Dao people. The wind-avoiding festival has become a unique festival of the Dao people, and has also become a tourist festival attracting the attention of visitors. Rituals in customs and practices have performed excerpts from the cap sac ceremony, the season-praying ceremony...
Although life is still difficult, the Dao Thanh Phan people still maintain their beautiful traditional culture. In the context of modernization and integration, the policy of developing community tourism in Binh Lieu is a correct orientation. This is a way of doing tourism that preserves the natural beauty and culture of the indigenous people, without losing traditional values.
