People in Dai Tu (Thai Nguyen) escape poverty thanks to tea trees

Hiện nay, huyện Đại Từ hiện có khoảng 6.600ha chè, trong đó chè giống mới chiếm tới 90% diện tích.
Currently, Dai Tu district has about 6,600 hectares of tea, of which new tea varieties account for 90% of the area.

This season, coming to Tan Linh commune, along both sides of the road are green tea fields winding along the hillsides, in the distance are lush fruit gardens. The commune currently has a total tea area of ​​599 hectares with a tea output of 135 quintals/ha/year. In the commune, there are 5 tea villages, including 1 traditional tea village, 4 other tea villages, including: 2 cooperatives, 22 cooperative groups, and 2 approved concentrated tea production areas.

Tea trees have been grown in Tan Linh commune for a long time. During the process of planting, caring for and processing tea, people always receive attention and support from agricultural extension officers, guiding them from planting, pruning, fertilizing, harvesting, and preserving products...

After many ups and downs, up to now, tea trees in Tan Linh have been identified as a promising crop with high economic efficiency. Tea production models have created awareness and positive changes among people from traditional farming, production and business to applying science and technology; linking production and business with ensuring food safety, protecting the environment and having a market nature, increasing income, and orienting towards sustainable development.

We visited the family of Ms. Tran Thi Lien, Hamlet 10, Tan Linh Commune, this is 1 of 72 poor households in Tan Linh Commune receiving fertilizer under the Community Production Development Support Project, Project 2 Diversifying Livelihoods, Developing Poverty Reduction Models, National Target Program (MTQG) for Sustainable Poverty Reduction in the period 2021 - 2025.

The project "Supporting biological organic fertilizers to serve the development of organic tea production" in Tan Linh commune in 2023 will be implemented with a total project cost of more than 1.1 billion VND.

Ms. Lien confided: Realizing that tea trees are very suitable for local climate and soil conditions, my family boldly converted the hilly land areas that were ineffective in growing trees to concentrated tea growing.

In addition, my family was also encouraged by district and commune officials to participate in the pilot tea planting model; we were supported with seeds, fertilizers, planting and care techniques. Up to now, the tea trees have been harvested stably, with an average yield of over 500 kg of fresh tea buds per crop. From growing tea, each year her family has a better source of income, the family's life has gradually stabilized, and they have gradually escaped poverty.

As for Ms. Le Thi Sung, in Hamlet 10 (Tan Linh Commune, Dai Tu District), her family grows more than 4 sao of tea, each crop yields 350 kg of tea, selling for about 23,000 VND/kg of fresh tea.

Ms. Sung shared: With the help and support of the local government, my family was supported with 850 kg of fertilizer, thereby helping the tea plants grow and develop well, increasing tea productivity and output, the number of tea picking batches reaching an average of 8-9 batches/year, applying to winter tea production with high economic value, the selling price of tea products increased from an average of 20,000 VND/kg to 35,000 VND/kg of fresh tea buds, winter tea production can reach 40,000 - 60,000 VND/kg of fresh tea buds, helping the family have a more stable source of income".

The successes in agricultural production development in general and tea production in particular are creating momentum in the process of hunger eradication and poverty reduction in the area. Up to now, the poverty rate of Tan Linh commune has decreased from 7.1% in 2023 to 4.4% in 2024, and the near-poor households have decreased from 7.54% to 5.4%.

Tea trees have helped many households in Tan Linh commune to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, and stabilize their lives.

Mr. Nguyen Van Binh, Head of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Dai Tu district affirmed: The National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction has always received the attention and direction of the Provincial People's Committee, departments and branches of the province; the District Party Committee, the District People's Council and the coordination of specialized agencies in advising the District People's Committee on implementation, so it has achieved certain results. The District People's Committee has always proactively issued guiding documents and plans to ensure timely, synchronous and correct implementation.

In the coming time, in order for the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction to be truly effective and achieve certain results, the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs will continue to do a good job of advising the District People's Committee, to strengthen leadership, direction, and mobilize the strength of the entire political system, social organizations, businesses and people to participate in the poverty reduction program.

In addition, promote propaganda, widely disseminate, and fully disseminate to all sectors, levels, and communities, especially the poor and poor households, the guiding viewpoints and contents of the district's poverty reduction program through the mass media. Organize propaganda of the Party and State's policies on poverty reduction; implement information columns to disseminate models, good, creative, effective practices on poverty reduction and the results of the program's activities; educate the awareness of self-reliance and non-reliance. Thereby, raising the responsibility for poverty reduction for the whole society.

In addition, the district also continues to synchronously and effectively implement poverty reduction policies; improve access to basic social services for poor households according to the Government's multidimensional poverty criteria (health, education, housing, domestic water, information, employment).

Mobilize all resources to serve poverty reduction with the motto of State support, People implementation. Mobilize from support capital sources of organizations, individuals and businesses in the area.

Strengthening inspection, monitoring and evaluation activities of the Poverty Reduction Program through a system of program monitoring and evaluation indicators at all levels to grasp the progress and results of implementing policies and solutions to support the poor and at the same time see the appropriateness and effectiveness of the program.
