Grade 9 students will take the grade 10 entrance exam in early June 2024.
The 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year will take place in June 2024. In accordance with the regulations on the organization and operation of specialized high schools of the Ministry of Education and Training (officially applied for the 2024-2025 school year), Ho Chi Minh City will not organize the admission of non-specialized 10th grade students in the two specialized schools, Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Be Hien, Principal of Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, starting from the 2024-2025 school year, the two specialized schools in Ho Chi Minh City will not organize non-specialized classes in specialized schools. This is a new point in 10th grade enrollment.
It is known that from the 2023-2024 school year onwards, in addition to enrolling students in specialized 10th grade classes in math, literature, English, computer science, physics, chemistry, etc., each year, Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia specialized schools enroll about 270 students in non-specialized 10th grade classes. Students admitted to non-specialized 10th grade take exams in 3 compulsory subjects: math, literature, foreign language and specialized subject but do not have enough score to be admitted to specialized classes and wish to enter non-specialized classes.
According to the leaders of the two specialized high schools mentioned above, when there is no longer a policy of enrolling non-specialized grade 10 students in specialized schools, the schools will develop enrollment plans and educational plans in accordance with the goals and development orientation of specialized schools.

The principal of Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted said that in the 2023-2024 school year, the school will enroll 180 non-specialized grade 10 students, equivalent to 4 non-specialized grade 10 classes. From the 2024-2025 school year, there will be no more non-specialized grade 10 classes. The school will develop a suitable plan, in which the organization of specialized classes as well as educational activities will be balanced in accordance with the educational orientation of the specialized school with 2 main tasks: advanced training, comprehensive development of students; nurturing talents, creating high-quality human resources for the city and the country.

Speaking to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the 10th grade entrance exam in 2024 will basically remain stable similar to that of 2023. Accordingly, the 10th grade entrance exam will take place in the first week of June 2024 and candidates will take 3 compulsory subjects: literature, foreign language, math (if registering for regular 10th grade) and specialized and integrated subjects (if registering for specialized 10th grade or integrated 10th grade).
According to Mr. Quoc, the exams are mainly written in essay format, with the foreign language subject combining essay and some multiple choice questions with 4 options. The exam content will be in the secondary school curriculum, mainly in grade 9. The requirements in the exam will ensure differentiation of students' abilities and levels and be consistent with the time allotted for each exam subject.
The Department of Education and Training continues to implement the policy of increasing questions requiring candidates to apply the knowledge they have learned to solve real-life situations. The 10th grade entrance exam does not only test students' subject knowledge but also focuses on testing students' ability to apply, read, and think logically.
