Bustling diplomacy of Cambodia's new Prime Minister

During talks with his Malaysian counterpart Dato Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian government for supporting Cambodia's candidacy for membership in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2028-2030 term and the Organizing Committee of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (OCPBC) for the 2025-2026 term.

In the field of energy security, Prime Minister Hun Manet called on his Malaysian counterpart to support the construction of undersea power cables, which need to run across Malaysia's maritime borders, as part of a green energy trade project between the two countries.

Congratulating Mr. Hun Manet on his appointment as head of the Royal Government of Cambodia, Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim believes that the cooperative relationship between the two countries will continue to be maintained well and further developed.

The two leaders also discussed measures to further enhance cooperation in the fields of politics, trade, investment, education, energy security, employment, and combating cybercrime and transnational crime.

At a meeting with his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed Cambodia's desire to learn from Singapore's experience in the defense sector, especially on the issue of compulsory military service.

The two leaders discussed measures to further strengthen and expand cooperation in potential areas such as trade, investment, tourism, education, security, energy, health, digital, agriculture and defense.

The possibility of Cambodia exporting rice and other agricultural products to the Singapore market, as well as the project to build an undersea power cable, part of a green energy trade project between the two countries, were also mentioned at the meeting.

Agreeing to consider the possibility of continuing to provide technical assistance and training to Cambodia in both civil and military fields, the head of the Singaporean government also invited the Cambodian Prime Minister to visit the Lion Island in the near future.

On the same morning, Prime Minister Hun Manet had a working breakfast with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

In a friendly, cordial, open and substantive atmosphere, the three Prime Ministers informed each other about the socio-economic development situation in each country; discussed common areas of cooperation and international and regional issues of mutual concern.

The leaders of the three governments agreed to continue to have policies and measures to facilitate and further encourage trade and investment cooperation, focusing on border trade and promoting the land border gate system between the three countries; further promoting connectivity between the three economies, including hard and soft infrastructure connections, production and supply chains.

The three sides also reached consensus on coordinating to exploit competitive advantages in terms of heritage, culture and cuisine potential to further promote tourism cooperation, first of all promoting "one journey, three destinations" tourism packages.

Previously, at the meeting on September 4, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Indonesian President Joko Widodo discussed and agreed to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of economics, trade, education and human resource training, and counter-terrorism and transnational crime.

The meetings in Jakarta took place as part of Hun Manet’s first overseas trip since he was confirmed as prime minister by the National Assembly on August 22. Hun Manet, 45, is the youngest attendee among the leaders of the 10 ASEAN member states.

The Cambodian leader is expected to have official and unofficial meetings with at least 17 heads of state, heads of government, as well as senior leaders of Southeast Asian countries, China, Japan, South Korea, India, the US, Russia, Australia and New Zealand.

In another development, according to a press release issued by the Cambodian National Assembly Secretariat, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Kim Jin Pyo began an official friendship visit to Cambodia today, September 6, at the invitation of President of the Cambodian National Assembly Khuon Sudary.
