The extension will be formally announced next week. Some diplomats said the allies had been looking for a successor to Jens Stoltenberg, but had failed to agree on the candidates.
Appointed on October 1, 2014 for a four-year term, former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has served two terms as NATO Secretary General and was extended for another year in 2022 after Russia launched a special military campaign in Ukraine.
