Came to the medical field because of my interest in watching movies related to medicine.

Since childhood, Thang never thought he would study medicine. People often oriented Thang to the police, army or technical groups. The male student himself has a hobby of watching movies, especially movies related to the medical industry. This contributed to Thang "falling into the hole" of group B. During his high school days, Thang tried to study subjects in group B to pursue medicine. Van Thang recalls his journey to medicine: "The review process back then was very memorable, I tried very hard, was careful and also had a lot of pressure. The school I dreamed of was Hanoi Medical University - where the entrance score is usually 29, 30 points. And finally, I was lucky to get 29.6 points in the high school exam, became the valedictorian of group B in Hanoi and experienced my youth at this long-standing university".

Thang can never forget the first day he entered school with many worries and surprises before the great achievements of his peers. With those worries, Thang had the opportunity to come to the Active Learning and Scientific Research Student Club, which changed his thinking and perception: “I had the lucky opportunity to join the Active Learning and Scientific Research Student Club. Here, I was taken care of, guided and instructed wholeheartedly by the seniors. I have many good brothers, sisters, friends and younger siblings. Participating in the academic program here also helped me improve my skills such as: Management, planning, running the program, helping me review knowledge, and prepare more firmly for the exam”.

After 4 years at Hanoi Medical University, in order to make effective use of his time, Thang uses the evening to review old lessons and prepare documents and knowledge for new lessons. The next day, he will examine patients, find problems and learn from doctors in the department. “The “clinical cases” encountered at the hospital have helped me apply them to review theory more effectively. The knowledge I have learned in medicine is never old. I also often study the problems I have learned more thoroughly and then share them with my junior medical classmates. This is a very useful way to learn and each day the knowledge I accumulate will be of better quality and more diverse, ultimately serving the purpose of becoming a doctor after graduation to diagnose diseases correctly and treat patients better,” Van Thang expressed.

Achieved many high achievements in study

Last June, Thang was honored to be one of three members of the team representing Hanoi Medical University to participate in the International Medical Biochemistry Competition IMBC 2024 and successfully achieved the position of collective runner-up and individual Silver Medal. “This is truly a memorable memory for me. During that exam week, I had to take the final clinical exam at school on Monday and Tuesday, and from Wednesday onwards, I had to fly to Ho Chi Minh City to attend this exam,” Thang confided. After many tough rounds, high tactical calculations and the first experience of taking a Biochemistry exam in English, Thang and his teammates were the only representatives of Vietnam to make it to the final round and achieved the title of runner-up. According to Thang, the competition was an opportunity for him to exchange, learn and make new friends.

Born into a poor family, Thang always had the will to study and develop himself. To earn more income to cover his studies, Thang maintained teaching an online Chemistry high school exam review class. “I have taught about 5 courses. This is also an opportunity for me to learn how to balance better because I need to arrange a teaching schedule, plan carefully and in detail, manage students and prepare lessons carefully. I feel very happy when many generations of my students have passed the university entrance exam and become students in engineering, economics, etc. with high results. This job has helped me gain more pedagogical skills, which I have been continuously improving, and also helps me study in groups and participate in classes at my medical school more conveniently and effectively,” Thang shared.

The activities and programs Thang has participated in are often related to the fields of Academics and scientific research such as: Organizing the program "How to study clinically? - Clinical innovation program"; Head of the Organizing Committee for teaching the program "Neurology module S2.8", Head of the Organizing Committee for the program "National Physiology Class 2023", volunteer at the AFCC 2023 Southeast Asian Cardiology Conference, volunteer at the program "THE SEA - sex education for secondary school students"... Many programs have been planned and organized by Thang with his colleagues.

For Van Thang, studying is always the most important, especially in the medical field, which is related to human health and life. “Although there are many periods of time participating in extracurricular activities, I still take advantage of free time during the day to study old lessons and prepare new lessons. The period from year 1 to year 3 is the period when I only learn knowledge, so I prioritize efficiency in studying: Studying from books, searching for documents in foreign languages to expand knowledge, connecting knowledge and then studying in groups to be able to talk about the knowledge learned to friends to remember better. During the study process, I have studied the knowledge quite thoroughly, so when reviewing for exams, it will be easier and I will remember faster. Therefore, the review time does not need to be too long”, Van Thang's secret to effective studying.
