After 16 years of dedication to the education sector, every month when receiving his salary, teacher Ho Sy Long, 39 years old, Nguyen Van Troi High School (Ha Tinh) is always worried.

Hope to live on salary

He is a grade II high school teacher, level 1, with a salary of more than 9 million VND/month. Compared to the pressure and working hours, this amount of money is not enough to cover living expenses.

"My students graduate and go to work with better incomes. Sometimes I think, how great it would be if teachers could live on their salaries," he said, adding that for many years this has always been the biggest wish of him and his colleagues.

Saving up monthly salary to buy a house or a car seems like a distant dream for teachers. With a meager income, if only meeting the minimum needs such as food, gas, and basic living expenses, it will be enough.

If something happens or someone in the family gets sick, the small salary puts many people in a difficult situation. Moreover, many teachers with seniority cannot buy land to build a house, and have to rent for decades.

Mr. Long's work quota is 16 periods/week. In addition to teaching hours, Mr. Long also works as an online sales employee for a company to earn some extra money. " I try to work after hours or on weekends. Even though I'm busy, having some extra money makes life less difficult," said this teacher.

Teaching is a profession that outsiders think is very glamorous, but only those in the profession can understand the hardships, fatigue and low salary. Mr. Long hopes that the government will have policies to help teachers feel secure in dedicating themselves to the profession, so that teachers do not have to ask themselves "when will I be able to live on my salary?".

Hope students are good

Ms. Nguyen Yen Nhi, 26 years old, a teacher at Xuan Hong Primary School (Ha Tinh) hopes that her students will have a smooth new school year. " I hope that students will study well and be obedient, this is probably the common answer of many teachers," Ms. Nhi said.

As a first grade homeroom teacher, Ms. Nhi faces great pressure because her students are unfamiliar with the elementary school curriculum. However, this teacher believes that with her love for her job and enthusiasm, she will complete her tasks well and guide her students to adapt well to the lessons.

Hope parents listen to multiple perspectives

According to Ms. Do Thu Ha, 25 years old, a teacher at Dai Tu Primary School (Hoang Mai, Hanoi), the rapid development of social networks sometimes makes parents easily believe in false, unverified educational information.

" I hope parents have a multi-dimensional view, carefully select information, and at the same time understand and acknowledge the efforts of teachers," said Ms. Ha.

Teachers are trying to innovate and be creative every day to bring the best results in their career of educating people. The trust of parents is a great motivation to help teachers and students have a happy new school year.

Eliminate "unwanted" jobs

Ms. Tran Thi My Trinh, 26 years old, a teacher at a high school in Can Tho, acknowledged the reality that teachers have to take on many additional jobs, outside of teaching hours. Most teachers have to "shoulder" other jobs, typically being a homeroom teacher.

"Being a teacher is already stressful, being a homeroom teacher is many times more stressful," she said, comparing homeroom teachers to "babysitters." Parents may know their children are not well-behaved, but every time something happens, from daily activities, lifestyle to studying problems... parents "question" the homeroom teachers.

In addition, when there are extracurricular programs, teachers have to take on dozens of additional tasks such as script writing, preparing performances... "If teachers are relieved of unnecessary tasks and can focus on their expertise, teaching effectiveness will definitely be higher ," Ms. Trinh affirmed.

Adjusting integrated subject teaching and reducing achievement burden

Ms. Than Thu Hang, 35 years old, a History teacher at a secondary school in Ninh Binh, hopes to be assigned to the same subject as before. This helps ensure the quality of education, moreover, many people see her complaining about the difficulty of having to take on more subjects.

She believes that it is very difficult for a teacher to teach three subjects, in addition to the requirements of knowledge and expertise, each person has their own passion. If before applying the new general education program and textbooks, teachers were properly trained to meet all three areas, teaching would be better.

"The new secondary school curriculum requires integrated teaching of Natural Sciences, History and Geography. Teachers can only be good at one subject or one field, they cannot be good at everything, so integrated teaching is difficult," Ms. Hang said.

As a History teacher, when switching to integrated teaching, Ms. Hang was confused because she could not imagine how she would teach or prepare lesson plans. This teacher hopes that the Ministry will review the teaching of integrated subjects.

In addition, Ms. Hang also hopes that teachers will be "untied" from the burden of achievement. Teachers are almost exhausted because of the pressure from the end-of-year report card results, student exams, especially the 10th grade entrance exam.

" Teachers have to shoulder the responsibility of making sure all students in the class pass the exam, pass their first choice, and ensure a high passing rate for the whole school," she said.

The head of school's feelings

Talking about his wishes for the new school year, Mr. Nguyen Hai Son, Principal of Hai Xuan Secondary School (Nam Dinh) shared the difficulties of teachers directly teaching in class.

What this principal worries about every day is improving the quality of life for teachers. Only when life is improved enough, can teachers feel secure in dedicating themselves to the education sector.

" I hope that the authorities will listen and understand the feelings of teachers, and from there have policies to help reduce the burden on teachers, especially in terms of salary and allowances, to help ensure that teachers can live on their own salary, " said Mr. Son, expressing his hope to enter the new school year with new confidence and new victories.

Similarly, Ms. Khuc Thi Hue, Principal of Ngoc Hoi High School (Hanoi), also hopes that teachers will have better salary and allowance policies in the 2023-2024 school year.

Ms. Hue hopes that those who "stand on the podium" will always be given good conditions to focus on teaching, improving the quality of the industry in general.

" Both teachers and students have high expectations for the new school year. I hope students will have an interesting school year, learn new knowledge, and discover their own strengths," Ms. Hue said, adding that students will be happy to study in a happy school.

According to information from the Ministry of Education and Training, the country currently has nearly 1.3 million university teachers and lecturers, a powerful force. The Ministry identifies the development of the teaching staff as an important factor, deciding the completion of the task of innovation and improving the quality of education.

The Ministry of Education and Training also hopes that the development of the Law on Teachers in the coming time will bring about positive changes in institutions, increase preferential allowances, and increase income for teachers.
