The United States is determined to prevent Iran and Iran-backed groups from exploiting the situation in Lebanon or expanding the conflict, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant in a phone call.

Mr. Lloyd Austin emphasized the US's full support for Israel's right to self-defense, affirming that the US will protect its forces and facilities in the region, as well as its commitment to the defense of Israel.
The above information was announced by Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder on September 28.
In Brussels, Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, recently expressed concern about the escalating tensions in Gaza and Lebanon, while emphasizing that we should not put too much hope in the US's impact on Israel.
Mr. Borrell cited the recent rejection by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of a US and French initiative for a 21-day ceasefire in Lebanon and even continued to increase stronger attacks on military targets.
The EU diplomat particularly stressed the possibility that the Israeli army will not stop fighting until Hezbollah is completely destroyed, similar to what is happening in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
In that context, Mr. Borrell called on the international community to seek diplomatic solutions to the Middle East conflict.
The EU official stressed that it was time for the parties involved to change their diplomatic approach to avoid falling into a spiral of prolonged conflict. The EU believes that only through multilateral and balanced international efforts can the region hope to move towards a sustainable peaceful solution.
According to Xinhua , stressing the need to work immediately toward a two-state solution, instead of waiting for a ceasefire, to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he said: "If you want to build a two-state solution, don't wait for a ceasefire. Start working now," before the Council on Foreign Relations, an influential US foreign policy research organization, in New York.
Mr. Borrell has promoted the solution of establishing a Palestinian state at several events on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting.
At an event on the sidelines of the Ministerial Council for the Middle East Peace Process on September 27, Mr. Borrell said, "We have a responsibility for the thousands of innocent children who have died," and warned that the way Israel conducts fighting in the Middle East is certainly not the way to ensure Israel's security.
“The attacks on Lebanon have caused so many civilian casualties that they cannot be justified by the right to self-defense,” he noted.
According to figures released by the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Israel has attacked Lebanon since September 23, killing more than 700 people and injuring nearly 2,200 others.
He pledged that the EU would continue to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
