Yonhap news agency quoted information from the USFK's 8th Corps as saying that the two-week exercise began on July 22 at the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex in Pocheon, about 30 km south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas, and will last until August 3.

A rotating US Stryker combat vehicle unit, a South Korean tank squadron and other units participated in the event. This was the first joint exercise, as previously it was held by the US military alone.

"This training is aimed at improving the rotational brigade's ability to adapt to the terrain and weather on the Korean Peninsula as well as integrating South Korean military equipment and tactics into squad-level tactics," the 8th Army press release said.

The US Army has been rotating Stryker combat vehicle units in South Korea every nine months since 2022, when it transitioned from an armored unit that rotated M1 Abrams tanks and M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles.

In another development, Mr. Yoon Bong-hee, Director of the Policy Planning Bureau of the Korean Ministry of National Defense, and Mr. Richard C. Johnson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear Policy and Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), attended a meeting of the Counter-WMD Committee in Seoul.

According to the announcement of the South Korean Ministry of National Defense on July 31, at the meeting held the day before, the two sides agreed to strengthen their joint response capabilities to threats from North Korea's nuclear weapons and WMD.

Washington and Seoul agreed to expand information sharing and enhance the expertise of relevant agencies through the Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) program, a U.S. security program aimed at enhancing allies’ capabilities against WMD threats.

The two sides also discussed the need for cooperation in the event of a nuclear and WMD attack by North Korea, and expanded exchanges and cooperation between relevant units for this purpose.

The WMD Counter-Committee meets annually alternately in Seoul and Washington.
