US, UK attack series of Houthi targets

The US and British militaries attacked more than 30 Houthi targets in response to attacks on cargo ships in the area by the group.

"These precision strikes were designed to disrupt and degrade the Houthis' capabilities to threaten global commerce and the lives of innocent sailors," said a joint statement from the US, UK and other countries supporting the February 3 airstrikes.

According to the statement, British and US forces coordinated attacks on "36 Houthi targets at 13 locations in Yemen", including weapons depots, missile complexes and launchers, air defense systems, and radars hidden by the force.

Earlier the same day, the US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the US military launched a separate attack on six anti-ship missiles that the Houthis "prepared to launch at ships in the Red Sea".

US forces shot down eight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) near Yemen, but did not say who operated them. Another US airstrike destroyed four Houthi UAVs before they could take off.

In November 2023, the Houthis began attacking cargo ships they believed were linked to Israel in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. The US and UK launched several attacks on the Houthis in response, but the attacks have not stopped.

The Houthi attacks on the ships come as fighting between militant groups in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria escalates, after Israel launched a campaign in response to a Hamas offensive in early October that killed and injured tens of thousands of people in the Gaza Strip.

Last weekend, a drone crashed into a base in Jordan, killing three US soldiers and injuring more than 40. On February 2, the US launched a retaliatory strike against dozens of targets at seven locations of Iran-linked armed groups in Iraq and Syria.
