From raising rare birds and wild animals for decoration, Ms. Mai Thi Muoi, Cat Minh commune, Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh has built a flock of hundreds of peacocks and red pheasants. Raising ornamental birds not only satisfies her hobby but also creates a fairly high income from selling breeding birds and peacock feathers.
As someone who has a hobby of raising and caring for ornamental birds and pets, Ms. Mai Thi Muoi, a farmer in Trung Chanh village, Cat Minh commune, Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh, and her family members were attracted by the appeal of peacocks and pheasants through television and social networks.
After a period of research, in early 2018, Ms. Muoi ordered a pair of peacocks and a pair of pheasants for nearly 5 million VND to raise.
Thanks to her passion for raising ornamental birds, Ms. Muoi actively takes care of them and gradually learns how to prevent diseases through actual raising, so these two rare bird species grow well.
When she had enough technical knowledge and experience in raising birds, she decided to invest capital to buy 3 more adult female peacocks (12 million VND/bird) to raise for reproduction and expand the flock.
At the same time, Ms. Muoi bought a machine to incubate bird eggs. She incubated all the peacock and pheasant eggs she laid to raise them.
Up to now, she has a flock of more than 120 birds, including 10 female peacocks laying eggs, 5 adult male peacocks and 5 pairs of adult red pheasants.
According to Ms. Muoi, each well-cared-for female peacock will lay eggs from 24 to 36 months old and each female will lay 20 to 30 eggs per year.
Peacock eggs are placed in an incubator for 29 days after they are laid, and the newly hatched chicks are placed in a brooding cage for 3 to 4 months before being released into the cage.
At this time, peacocks cost about 5 million VND/pair. If raised for 1 year, peacocks will cost about 8 million VND/pair. If raised to adulthood (2-4 years), each pair of peacocks will cost from 12 to 60 million VND depending on shape, feather color...

Ms. Mai Thi Muoi, a farmer raising two rare bird species, the green peacock and the red pheasant, in Trung Chanh village, Cat Minh commune, Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh, is taking care of her family's flock of peacocks.
As for pheasants, each female bird will lay eggs after 24 months and each bird will lay 15 to 20 eggs per year. The eggs will hatch after 21 days of incubation. Each pair of chicks after incubation will cost nearly 2 million VND, when they are 7-8 months old, they will cost about 4 million VND/pair and when they are adults, they will cost about 8-10 million VND/pair.
Ms. Muoi said that peacocks and pheasants are very easy to raise. Every day, she only needs to spend 2 hours feeding, cleaning the cage and changing the drinking water, the remaining time can be spent doing many other things. Food for birds is also simple and easy to find such as bran, rice, fruit, etc. In addition, these two types of birds also have very few diseases, just need to vaccinate when first opened and mix medicine to feed when the weather changes for the birds to grow well.
With that method, for about a year now, Ms. Muoi's family has had birds to sell in many different sizes depending on customer requirements, bringing in hundreds of millions of dong in income. Her family's birds are not only sold to people in the area but also to many markets inside and outside the province such as: Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh, Binh Duong, Ha Nam, Hung Yen...
With her knowledge and experience through practical care, Ms. Muoi is willing to share so that everyone can learn and apply.

In addition to raising peacocks, Ms. Mai Thi Muoi, Trung Chanh village, Cat Minh commune, Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh also raises red pheasants, which are also expensive and rare ornamental birds. Raising ornamental birds helps her and her family members satisfy their passion.
In addition, the peacock's tail feathers during moulting also have high aesthetic value and are purchased by many people to make decorations, especially during Tet.
Income from selling peacock feathers alone brings Mai Thi Muoi's family about 10 million VND/year.
Compared with other types of pets, it can be seen that Ms. Muoi's family's bird raising model has many advantages such as: does not take up much space, is easy to raise, and is both entertaining and provides income.
Not only that, raising ornamental birds such as green peacocks and red pheasants does not have pressure to sell, birds can be sold at many different stages, the more mature the bird, the higher the price....
Not only does it bring in a significant source of income, but raising and caring for peacocks and pheasants every day also helps Ms. Muoi and her family members satisfy their passion.
She considers them as her spiritual children and cannot be separated from them. Whenever she goes away for a day or two, she misses them. Therefore, Ms. Muoi is planning to expand her scale in the near future to satisfy her passion as well as develop the family's economy.
