One day, they may or may not belong to Russia.

A few days before the meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference in Germany (February 14-16), White House owner Donald Trump made a new comment about the conflict in the Eastern European country.

In an interview with Fox News , aired on February 10, US President Donald Trump made it clear: “They (Russia-Ukraine) can reach an agreement or not. One day they (Ukraine) can belong to Russia, or not".

According to him, whether or not what he mentioned happens, the issue that the 47th owner of the White House is interested in is recovering profits from US aid to Ukraine, while suggesting a deal in exchange for the Eastern European country's natural resources, such as rare minerals.

“We’re putting a lot of money into it and I said I want an equal value in return, about $500 billion in rare earth minerals. And they basically agreed to do that,” the US president said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier welcomed Washington's investment in rare earth minerals in the Eastern European country, stating: " The Americans have helped the most, so they should benefit the most."

In addition, Mr. Trump also confirmed that he will soon send special envoy Keith Kellogg to Ukraine to develop a proposal to end the conflict that is almost 3 years old.

The US president is pushing for a quick solution to the conflict but has not offered a detailed proposal to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table. Both Mr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin have previously ruled out direct talks with each other and there appears to be little basis for a deal.

Kiev has demanded that Washington provide strong security commitments as part of any deal with Moscow. Ukraine fears that any deal that does not include a hard military commitment — such as NATO membership or the deployment of peacekeepers — would only give the Kremlin time to reorganize and rearm for a new offensive.

Meanwhile, Russia demands that Ukraine withdraw from many southern and eastern regions that Kiev still controls, and considers the Eastern European country's move closer to NATO unacceptable.
