At that point, Twitter and other social media platforms locked Mr. Trump’s accounts out of concern that he would incite further violence with false claims of voter fraud that led to his defeat to Mr. Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
Billionaire Musk later bought Twitter and renamed it X. He restored Mr. Trump’s account on the platform and was a major supporter of Mr. Trump during the recent presidential race. Mr. Trump appointed Mr. Musk to head the newly created Department of Government Efficiency.
In January, Meta agreed to pay Mr. Trump $25 million to settle a 2021 lawsuit he filed alleging Facebook and Instagram wrongfully censored him after the Capitol riots. Under the settlement, Meta will not admit wrongdoing in suspending Mr. Trump’s accounts.
Mr Trump has been highly critical of social media platforms for suspending his accounts following the January 6, 2021 riots.
After taking office in January, the US President pardoned more than 1,500 of his supporters in the Capitol riots, and ordered the suspension of all pending criminal cases against defendants in the incident.
