In response to US President Donald Trump's request to buy Greenland, more than 200,000 Danes have signed a petition to raise $1 trillion to buy the state of California (USA).

According to CNN on February 12, the petition is sarcastic and ironic. "Have you ever looked at a map and wondered what Denmark needs? Maybe more sunshine, palm trees and roller skates. Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make that dream come true," according to the petition.

"Buy the state of California from President Donald Trump. Yes, you heard that right. California can be ours, and we need your help to make it happen," the petition reads.

The petition cites a number of reasons why Denmark would benefit from the California purchase, including improved weather, a secure avocado supply, and a strong technological base. The petition adds that by purchasing California, Denmark could join in “defending the free world” and rename Disneyland “Hans Christian Andersenland.” “California would become New Denmark. Los Angeles? Maybe Los Angeles would be more appropriate,” the petition quips.

The petition comes after US President Trump proposed buying the world's largest island, Greenland (an autonomous territory of Denmark). The US leader also stressed that the US did not rule out the possibility of using military or economic power to persuade Denmark to agree to the deal.

Danish officials have repeatedly voiced strong opposition to Trump’s desire to own the island. According to CNN, Danish officials are also concerned that Trump has shown much more seriousness about the idea of buying Greenland than during his first term (2017-2021). In 2019, Trump proposed buying Greenland from Denmark, but the idea quickly met with strong opposition.

Despite the protests, the debate over Greenland's future has flared up again as the independence movement has grown. In his New Year's address, Greenland's leader Mute Egede said the island should be freed from the "shackles of colonialism," although he did not mention the United States directly, according to CNN.
