Enrollment quotas for grade 10 of many schools have decreased due to classroom renovations or to meet national standards.
Two days ago, the Department of Education and Training announced the 10th grade enrollment quota. Accordingly, 117 non-specialized public high schools will enroll 71,000 students, an increase of about 1,500 compared to last year.
Although the total quota increased, 6/12 inner-city districts reduced the number of 10th grade seats. Ha Dong district had the biggest reduction - 270 students, followed by Hoang Mai (135), Hoan Kiem, Long Bien and Cau Giay districts reduced 90 quotas each. This is an area that accounts for nearly half of Hanoi's population, the competition rate for 10th grade is usually 1/2 or more, twice as high as in the suburbs.
Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Bac Tu Liem District, said it will enroll 675 students this year, a decrease of 45 students - equivalent to one class - compared to last year.
Principal Doan Minh Chau explained that this was to suit the school's physical facilities. Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School has 23 classrooms, and can hold up to 46 classes a day in the morning and afternoon. Last year, the school enrolled 720 10th graders, equivalent to 16 classes. The remaining two grades have 15 classes each, so the school has made the most of its classroom capacity.
"This year we have 15 graduating classes, so we are also recruiting 15 new classes with a maximum of 45 students per class. If we continue to maintain the quota of 16 classes like last year, the school will not have enough rooms," Mr. Chau shared.
The reduction in quotas is also due to regulations on national standard schools and the operating charter of high schools, according to Mr. Nguyen Gia Khanh, principal of Le Quy Don High School - Ha Dong, and Mr. Le Hong Chung, principal of Yen Hoa High School, Cau Giay District. These two schools have reduced their quotas by 45 compared to last year.
According to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, the Provincial People's Committee specifically regulates the number of students in each class, but must gradually reduce the number and ensure no more than 45 students.
In addition, to meet national standards, high schools must not have more than 45 classes. Thus, schools can only enroll 15 10th grade classes each year.
"To meet the national standard, we also proposed 675 10th grade students and it was approved," said Mr. Khanh.
Located in the suburbs, Da Phuc High School, Soc Son district, also reduced enrollment by 135 new students, from 675 to 570.
Principal Nguyen Duy Hien said that because the school will be rebuilt next school year, it will not be able to recruit 15 classes like last year. Next year, when the facilities are stable, the school plans to return to the old quota.
