In Hai Chau district, the peak campaign of general environmental sanitation, dredging, and sewer clearing before the 2023 rainy season lasted from September 16 to 30 with many activities such as general cleaning of all areas and roads; investing, repairing, and upgrading damaged manholes and water intakes; dredging and clearing the flow of 52 sewers under 10.5m according to classification, prioritizing the treatment of dead-end areas with congestion, clearing water intakes, etc.

This morning, the dredging construction units under the 2023 drainage package have started dredging mud at the drainage sewer on Ong Ich Khiem Street (from Nguyen Van Linh to Le Duan); residents and unions of wards in Hai Chau District have simultaneously started dredging and cleaning water intakes, sweeping residential streets such as Thai Phien, Ho Bieu Chanh, Tong Phuoc Pho, Nguyen Thien Thuat, Trung Nu Vuong, etc.

Mr. Nguyen Van Duy, Vice Chairman of Hai Chau District People's Committee, said that along with economic development, the amount of waste discharged into the environment is increasing. In addition to factors such as pressure on the ability of drainage infrastructure to respond to the increase of many large-scale projects, the impact of extreme weather (typically the historic rain in October 2022) causing overload on the drainage system leading to flooding, there is also a cause from a part of the people still having the habit of freely dumping waste, dumping waste into the drains, blocking and covering the water intakes leading to congestion, localized flooding, affecting the drainage capacity during the rainy season.

One of the major causes of localized flooding in the recent rain is believed to be due to the gates and drainage pipes on the roads being clogged with mud and garbage.
