China's CCTV reported that 19 people died in the landslide, local authorities have stopped rescue operations and are investigating the cause.
Earlier, local authorities sent more than 180 people and dozens of rescue equipment to the landslide site, located in a mountainous area about 240 km from the capital Chengdu.
The landslide site is located in a remote and heavily forested area prone to natural disasters such as landslides and earthquakes. Weather monitoring data showed that the city of Leshan had been hit by heavy rain for two days before the incident.
In 2017, a massive landslide in Mao County, Sichuan Province, killed more than 120 people. It was believed to be the largest landslide in the area since the 2008 Wenchuan County earthquake that killed 87,000 people.
