Images and videos circulating on social media showed the fire creating a large plume of smoke. AFP news agency quoted China's CCTV as saying the fire was extinguished at 8:20 p.m. on July 17 (local time) but there were still people trapped inside the building.
According to initial reports, the fire killed at least 6 people, about 30 people were rescued from the building and rescue work is still continuing to rescue those still trapped.

There is currently no information on the cause of the fire. It is known that the building where the incident occurred has 14 floors and the fire broke out on the lower floors.
In March, a major forest fire broke out in Sichuan Province. The Ministry of Emergency Management of China mobilized 1,260 firefighters from national and local fire brigades to control the blaze.
In January, a fire at a store in Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province, eastern China, killed 39 people. Xinhua News Agency reported at the time that the fire was caused by workers illegally using fire in the basement of the store. The incident came days after a fire at a school in Henan Province killed 13 students sleeping in their dormitory.
