Boxing Day, a national holiday in the UK, is celebrated every year on December 26, the day after Christmas. The holiday dates back to 1871, but its exact origins are unknown. The name "Boxing Day" is said to have come from the practice of employers giving their employees Christmas boxes and giving them the day off.
Since 1888, England's top football leagues have been playing matches on Boxing Day in the hope of attracting more spectators to the stadium. With the day off from work, people often gather outside and go to the stadium to watch football.
This year, the Premier League and the Championship will hold almost all of their fixtures on Boxing Day. For the Premier League, the organizers have allocated most of the Round of 18 matches for December 26, with a few matches for December 27 (UK time).
