Accordingly, in 1959, Ben San nursing home was established. In 1979, the nursing home was recognized as a unit under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health with the name of leprosy treatment area.
On November 8, 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee officially changed the name of the leprosy treatment area to Ben San Hospital. The hospital is responsible for examining and treating people with leprosy sequelae in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong province and expanding medical services to the community.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that Ben San Hospital has been playing a very important role in caring for and treating leprosy patients.

According to Mr. Dung, the name change event is not only a recognition of the achievements of the leprosy treatment area but also opens a new stage of development with a higher mission and duty.
In addition to performing its main function of caring for and treating leprosy patients, the hospital needs to quickly develop a project to supplement other types of health care and treatment, especially in the field of palliative care, to meet the medical examination and treatment needs of the people.
Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Trung Chien, former member of the Party Central Committee and former Minister of Health, expressed her gratitude for the efforts of the medical staff of many generations of Ben San Hospital and related departments, agencies and branches.
"This name change opens up a new horizon, creating conditions for the hospital's leadership, staff, and doctors to realize their dream goals, aiming to protect and care for people's health," said Ms. Chien.
