Using professional measures, the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention has discovered a suspected ring illegally trading in personal data of citizens nationwide, buying and selling nearly 56 million pieces of personal data of Vietnamese citizens nationwide.
Initially, the investigation agency determined that the behavior of the above subjects had signs of committing the crime of "Illegal provision or use of information on computer networks and telecommunications networks" as prescribed in Article 288 of the Penal Code. The behavior of the subjects seriously affected the State management of social order, created conditions or assisted other subjects to commit other crimes, and needed to be strictly handled according to regulations. The Investigation Security Agency, Hue City Police, initiated a case and prosecuted 3 subjects for the crime of "Illegal provision or use of information on computer networks and telecommunications networks".
To prevent the consequences of buying and selling personal data, Lieutenant Colonel Mai Van Toan, Head of the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, recommends that users should regularly change their passwords, use two-factor authentication, and be careful when sharing personal information with others. At the same time, it is necessary to check and verify information when requested by people claiming to be government officials, bank employees, network operators, etc., requesting to provide personal information.
