The Russian military has once again targeted Kiev’s US-made MIM-104 Patriot long-range air defense system. Video posted on social media on February 22 shows three attacks on warehouses near the Chernobaevka settlement in Kherson. A HEMTT 8×8 truck, which is often used to tow Patriots’ M90x launchers, can be seen entering one of the warehouses before the airstrike. Russian sources said the AN/MSQ-104 engagement control post, a key part of the air defense system, was also stored there.
According to SF, a high-precision guided missile and two FAB-500M-62 heavy bombs equipped with a glide and correction module were used in the attack on warehouses near Chernobaevka.
Ukrainian forces received three complete batteries along with four additional launchers. Two batteries and two launchers were donated by Germany, one battery by the United States, and two additional launchers by the Netherlands.
The systems supplied to Kiev are said to be a combination of the PAC-3 active attack missile with a ballistic missile with a range of only 30-60 km and the PAC-2 semi-active missile with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead with a range of up to 160 km.
The Russian military has repeatedly targeted Patriot components. Recently, reports revealed that Kiev forces have integrated the system’s missiles with Soviet-era command and control radars under a program called “FrankenSAM.” This explains why some missiles are still fired from time to time.
Kiev forces are believed to have used a Patriot missile to shoot down a Russian Il-76 military plane on January 24, killing more than 60 Ukrainian prisoners of war on board.
On the battlefield, fighting is still extremely fierce. The Russian army continues to expand the scale of attacks in many directions.
