When young people marry late

(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - Nowadays, many young people tend to get married late to focus on work and explore life according to personal interests.

A myriad of reasons

More and more young people are “lazy” about love and delay marriage. For them, the age of 22-30 is the “golden” time for them to focus on their work, learn new skills and enjoy life by traveling and exploring new lands.

For nearly 8 years, Nguyen Tran Thu Hau, in Duc Phong commune (Mo Duc), has spent time exploring many locations in more than 20 provinces and cities across the country.                                           Photo: Y THU

At the age of 33, Nguyen Tran Thu Hau, from Duc Phong commune (Mo Duc), spends her free time traveling. For her, besides the joy of work, traveling here and there, visiting and exploring the beauty of many new lands, helps her life to always be full of energy and happiness.

“While my peers are happily living with their husbands and children, I also have my own joys. I focus on my professional work, do well as a physician, and spend time traveling everywhere. I have been to about 20 provinces and cities, learned about many new lands, and made many new friends. Many people believe that, at my age, I must put marriage first. But I think that it is better to wait for the right person before falling in love. It is better to marry late than to rush into marrying the wrong person and then not be happy,” Ms. Hau confided.

Ms. Pham Thi Nhu Y (28 years old), in Duc Phu commune (Mo Duc) said that recently, she has temporarily put aside her love life to focus on her business. Leaving her hometown to start a business in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Y boldly borrowed money and invested hundreds of millions of VND to open a health food store.

Sharing her views on marriage, Ms. Ý said that witnessing the married life of many friends of the same age, she realized that marriage is not a rosy story for lovers. There are friends of the same age as Ý but have been divorced twice. Therefore, for Ý, to have a happy marriage, both people must build and nurture it together. In which, financial foundation plays a very important role. Therefore, Ý wants to stabilize her career, prepare a financial foundation for herself, so that when she gets married, she will have enough conditions to take care of herself and her family.

Although she has turned 33, Ha My, from Nghia Ha commune (Quang Ngai city) is still in no hurry to get married. “For me, marriage is a journey of happiness, so I will only get married when I meet the right person. Suitable here means someone who has similar views on life and attitudes towards life. Marriage must make people live happier, more joyfully, not a uniform that anyone who comes of age to get married must wear to be like others. Whether single or married, you still have to live well, live positively to enjoy the value of life," My shared.

Mr. NVL (38 years old), in Tinh Dong commune (Son Tinh) said that getting married is finding a friend to share the joys and sorrows of life. If they are not compatible, it will be difficult to go through life together. Therefore, you cannot just choose someone to marry, as everyone advises and urges.

A new trend

Nowadays, late marriage has become a trend for many young people. The results of the Population Change and Family Planning Survey released in 2020 by the General Statistics Office show that the "picture" of marriage trends has changed significantly over the past 30 years. Accordingly, the average age of marriage for Vietnamese men has increased from 24.4 years old in 1989 to 27.9 years old in 2020. Also according to the General Statistics Office, in Quang Ngai, the average age of first marriage has increased from 24.5 years old (in 2010) to 25.55 years old (in 2020). In some big cities, such as Ho Chi Minh City, the average age of marriage is approximately 28 years old (in 2020)...

Analyzing the trend of late marriage among young people, Dr. Ngo Thi Kim Ngoc, lecturer at Pham Van Dong University, said that according to statistics from the Institute of Family and Gender Studies in 2018, on average, the whole country had over 60,000 divorces each year, accounting for 30% of the total number of couples. This means that out of every 10 couples who get married, 3 couples get divorced. For many young couples, the lack of financial foundation and important skills when entering married life are among the reasons contributing to the increase in the divorce rate.

Faced with the above reality, young people, when witnessing the breakdown and pressure in married life from everyone around them, have made them tend to marry late. Some young people want to spend time stabilizing their careers and taking care of their finances to lay the foundation for marriage. Other young people tend to enjoy a free life, have fun, and enjoy life before entering married life. Along with that, young people's requirements for marriage are also increasing, they require their spouse to be in harmony with them in spirit, to have a financial foundation, career... These reasons are making young people increasingly tend to marry late.

Dr. Ngo Thi Kim Ngoc believes that getting married late helps young people prepare more carefully financially and with the necessary skills, creating a foundation for married life. However, there are also some concerns when young people get married late. The program to adjust birth rates to suit regions and groups by 2030 approved by the Prime Minister states: "Encourage men and women to get married before the age of 30, not to get married late and have children early. Women should have their second child before the age of 35." Because giving birth after the age of 35, the health of both the mother and child face more risks than giving birth before this age.

Parents' feelings

Many young people are not in a hurry to get married, even when they are over 30 years old, while parents are worried that their children have not "set up a family yet", afraid that they will pass the best age of their life to love and get married. Anxious when his daughter turns 32 and is still not married, Mr. NQ, in Chau O town (Binh Son) pensively said: "When I urged my daughter to find a lover and get married soon, she was upset and upset. She thought I was childish and backward. But it was only when she became a parent that she understood that it was not for nothing that parents wanted their children to get married before the age of 30. Because getting married late and having children late entails many health consequences for both mother and child. But it seems that she does not understand that, she keeps thinking that her parents are imposing and urging her."
