The gates representing the planets of the Solar System in the Heart of Hanoi project changed the schedule of 7-year-old Phuong Mai to visit Thong Nhat Park. At first, she only planned to go there to ride the roller coaster. But then, she and her mother met an astronomy guide wearing an astronaut suit and followed him. Her journey to explore the solar system began. "My mother and I happened to come here, saw the guide and a lot of children, so we followed. She liked listening to him talk about the planets," said Phuong Mai's mother.
The guide's lesson is about questions and cute stories about the planets. Mars is named so because ancient Asians saw it as red. It is red because on this planet there are many iron oxide rocks with a characteristic red color. That red color is close to fire in the eyes of the East, so this star has that name. But in the West, they think it is close to the color of blood. Therefore, they call this planet by the name of the god of war Mars...
Solar System in the Heart of Hanoi is the Vietnamese name of the Our Place in Space project. Accordingly, a route with gates symbolizing the planets in the solar system is built. Besides the tour guide, participants can also download the Our Place in Space application to view information about these planets on their phones.

The Solar System in the Heart of Hanoi was designed by artist Oliver Jeffers and astronomer Professor Stephen Smartt. The project is organized by Northern Ireland’s leading creative media arts organization, Nerve Centre, and social enterprise Think Playgrounds (Vietnam). Previously, Our Place in Space was also built in the UK and attracted experiences throughout 2022 and 2023.
Paintings of the solar system are displayed along the route.
The planets in the solar system are recreated at Thong Nhat Park at a scale of 1: 591 million compared to reality. The sun model will be only 2.35 m in diameter, the earth is 2.2 cm and Pluto is only 4 mm. Each planet will be mounted on a large colorful arch. After visiting all the planets at Thong Nhat Park, children can continue their journey of discovery at Hoan Kiem Lake and Bach Thao Park as they like.
These planetary portals give visitors a different perspective on the solar system, says David Lewis, production manager at the Nerve Centre. “They help us explore the meaning of life on Earth today and how we can share and protect this planet in the future,” he says.
Astronomy guide guides children through the solar system
Mr. Nguyen Tieu Quoc Dat, PR Director of Think Playgrounds, said: "Children naturally love the universe". Therefore, he was not surprised that in the group of tourists visiting the Solar System in the Heart of Hanoi, there were many children who answered difficult questions about the planet correctly. According to Mr. Dat, because of their love, children will read and watch documents about the universe and remember them very quickly. The Our Place in Space sculpture route and related events will promote exploration and inspire appreciation for the planet in all those who experience it.

In addition, there are also entertainment spots located along the route. The book area with many books about astronomy and the universe made by Nha Nam company. The STEM area with many experiments organized under the trees, the area for instructions on making a model of the universe from recycled materials... Parents can experience the challenge of making slime (an elastic substance) with their children. This is associated with the story of how after the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago, the early universe swelled and continued to expand. Children are also guided to create electric currents from fruits and vegetables...
STEM Experience in Solar System Exploration
Ms. Donna McGowan, Country Director of the British Council in Vietnam, said that the Solar System in Hanoi is not just a road. "It is also an exploration of our place in the universe, an opportunity to think about our existence through a unique lens across many fields and a wide community connection." She also said that this is an important activity in the year of celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between the UK and Vietnam.
