IOM will work closely with the Government of Canada and other partners to support the safe resettlement of Afghan refugees in their new home, IOM Director General Amy Pope said. “We are honoured to help Canada bring tens of thousands of vulnerable Afghans to safety,” she said.

Throughout its 70-year journey, as an organization with a global mission to support the safe resettlement of migrants, IOM has worked with governments and partners to ensure that refugees have every opportunity to thrive in their new communities.

IOM estimates that it has assisted in the resettlement of more than 6.4 million people through a number of programmes including refugee resettlement, humanitarian admissions, European resettlement, family resettlement and other pathways.

Canada is one of the first countries to launch a special humanitarian resettlement program for vulnerable Afghans, including women leaders, human rights activists, ethnic or religious minorities, the LGBTI+ community, and journalists.
