(CLO) Within the framework of the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2024, on the afternoon of November 12, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Association of Architects held the Workshop "Tradition from the perspective of contemporary architecture".

In his opening speech and introduction to the Workshop, Dr. Architect Nguyen Quoc Tuan (Vietnam Association of Architects) said that today's event took place with 3 main parts: Preserving traditional architectural values (identifying, researching, surveying, selecting typical values and works through the periods); Exploiting and promoting traditional architectural values in contemporary Vietnamese architecture; Innovation in the development of Vietnamese architecture.

The Vietnamese traditional value system is extremely rich and unique. Researching, identifying, evaluating and preserving the values of traditional Vietnamese architecture is an urgent requirement. This work is both our responsibility and our duty, to continuously maintain, consolidate and promote national identity in urban and architectural development.

“Our country does not have monumental architectural relics, but it has many relics rich in diversity in types, reflecting the traditions and cultural identities of Vietnamese ethnic groups. Architectural relics are material and spiritual evidence of historical and cultural traditions, reflecting the lives and behaviors of people towards nature and society,” emphasized Dr. Architect Nguyen Quoc Tuan.

According to experts, traditional architecture is a material cultural product that clearly expresses elements passed down from generation to generation, created according to customs and experiences of many generations in a dialectical inheritance manner. Continuing research, from identifying, evaluating, preserving the values of traditional Vietnamese architecture, to promoting those values in the development of contemporary Vietnamese architecture, in the context of development and integration, is extremely necessary.

Assessing the overall view of traditional Vietnamese architecture, Master of Architecture Nguyen Thi Huong Mai (Institute of Monuments Conservation) said that Vietnam is a multi-ethnic country and also diverse in regions and natural environments. The process of formation and development of traditional Vietnamese architecture is closely linked to the history of building and defending the country of our ancestors. It is a long historical period of thousands of years of struggle and resistance against nature and foreign invaders to survive and build and preserve the cultural identity and civilization of the nation.

In fact, traditional architecture in Vietnam is very rich and diverse in types, from royal architecture, religious architecture, beliefs to public and traditional folk architecture, but there is not much difference in structure.

“Formed and developed over a long period of time, associated with feudal dynasties in Vietnam from the 10th to the 19th century, traditional Vietnamese architecture is relatively stable in form, structure, construction method and expression. From there, it creates its own characteristics and nuances corresponding to regions and types from royal architecture, religious architecture, beliefs to traditional public and folk architecture. The characteristics and nuances of traditional architecture have been formed on the basis of national culture and these characteristics and nuances have contributed to creating the cultural identity of the Vietnamese people,” added architect Nguyen Thi Huong Mai.

According to architect Huong Mai, the preservation of architectural heritage cannot be understood in the strict sense of “boxing” - museumizing to protect the original state as with relics. In practice, relic restoration also has times when it is necessary to reveal (reduce), reposition (rearrange) or supplement, restore (add). It is necessary to delimit and control areas to protect heritage, but not to absolutely prohibit development, but only to limit, control, select and regulate appropriate development scenarios.

Experts also believe that choosing appropriate methods and tools to preserve and promote the value of architectural heritage groups is extremely necessary, especially for architectural heritages located in modern urban structures, at the stage of urban and socio-economic development. Therefore, specific studies and assessments are needed to choose effective and practical solutions to preserve and promote the value of architectural heritages...

Throughout the workshop, experts and architects presented papers to provide important data on the tradition in Vietnamese architecture through the ages; values and characteristics; experience in exploiting traditional values in contemporary architecture and suggesting future directions... to continue exploiting and developing indigenous cultural and architectural values in the current context of integration.
