Many students said they felt "relieved" when they learned that they would have to take the 10th grade entrance exam with three subjects: Math, Literature, and English, but teachers were not surprised.
This afternoon, when the teacher announced that the 10th grade entrance exam had three subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language, Hoang Minh Thu, class 9A6, Sai Dong Secondary School, Long Bien District, felt relieved, as if she had been relieved of a long-standing psychological pressure.
"I'm so excited," Thu said.
Thu plans to put her first choice into Cao Ba Quat High School - a school with an average standard score of about 7.65 per subject. When taking practice tests, female students often get 9 points in Math and English, and 7-8 points in Literature. Therefore, Thu is not too worried if she takes three subjects, but it will be "a problem" if she takes a fourth subject.
Thu said that she and her friends have the mentality of only studying when the exam subjects are announced. Therefore, if the fourth subject falls into Chemistry, Physics, Biology - subjects that are not their strengths, Thu is worried that the admission score will be pulled down.
"Now I can focus on improving my Literature score and maintaining my Math and English results," Thu said.
Sharing the same sentiment, Ngoc Anh, from Ba Dinh District, also supports this option. The female student said that in addition to applying to Phan Dinh Phung High School, she also registered for English classes at two specialized schools: Pedagogical University and Hanoi - Amsterdam.
"Because my major subject overlaps with the 10th grade exam subject, my review is quite convenient. But if a fourth subject arises, it will be difficult for me to arrange my time, adding more pressure," Ngoc Anh said.

Not only students, many parents are also happy to know the city's exam plan. Ms. Thu Quynh, living in Dong Da, said she felt "relieved". Her daughter is taking extra classes every week, only Friday and Sunday nights are available. If she has to take another exam, she will no longer have a day off, and the family will have to take her to and from school and spend more money.
"Three subjects are already tiring, my child wants to increase the Math session but I can't handle it," Quynh shared.
Quynh's daughter aims to pass Dong Da High School. Last year, this school had an average score of 7.9 points per subject. The mother said her daughter's academic performance was about 8 points, but she was still worried because "the psychology of taking the exam will be very different." She said that in addition to encouraging her daughter to review for the three subjects, she would look for a private school with reasonable tuition as a backup.
Information about the 10th grade exam with three subjects is eagerly awaited by parents and students because according to the 10th grade admission regulations, issued in 2019 by Hanoi, this exam will take place with four subjects. Of which, the fourth subject is announced in March every year.
According to a survey by VnExpress , 93% of more than 500 respondents support Hanoi's decision to have three-subject exams for 10th graders.
This year, in addition to Hanoi, many localities have also reduced the number of subjects for the 10th grade exam. Vinh Phuc, Ninh Binh, and Hung Yen have eliminated two combined exams, keeping only three subjects: Math, Literature, and English for high school admission. In more than 30 provinces and cities that have announced their 10th grade exam plans, no place has organized exams for more than three subjects.

Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, principal of Thai Thinh Secondary School in Dong Da District, said the decision to have three subjects for the 10th grade exam was reasonable for two reasons. First, this year’s junior high school graduates had to study online for the first two years of their junior high school education. Second, this is also the last group of students to study the 2006 general education program for junior high school.
Therefore, Mr. Cuong thinks that the 10th grade exam plan should aim for stability, minimizing pressure on students.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Hong, principal of Chuong Duong Secondary School in Hoan Kiem District, said that although she was not too surprised by the city's decision to have three subjects, she was relieved when the information was officially announced. According to Ms. Hong, most parents and students agreed with this plan.
The two principals said that the schools were not passive because they had planned for three or four subjects. For now, the students’ regular study schedule will not change, and no teaching hours for other subjects will be cut. After the students finish their second semester exams, the schools will intensify their review sessions.
"Schools and teachers all have a lot of experience in reviewing and reviewing knowledge for 10th grade students. Therefore, students and parents do not need to worry," said Mr. Cuong.
The 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi takes place on June 8-9. The admission score is the sum of the Math and Literature scores multiplied by a factor of 2, plus the foreign language score and priority points (if any).
According to statistics from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, this year there are about 133,000 students graduating from secondary school, an increase of more than 5,000. It is expected that 81,200 students will be admitted to public schools (accounting for more than 60%, similar to last year), 29,100 students will study in private schools (21.5%), the rest will go to continuing education centers and vocational schools.
From next year, Hanoi's 10th grade exam may change as the first batch of students following the new general education program will graduate from junior high school.
