Visiting Myanmar's Thuwunna Stadium, the Indonesian team had a difficult first half. Despite holding the ball for more than 60% of the time, coach Shin Tae-yong's attack had no connection and struggled to find a way into Myanmar's goal. Not only that, the Indonesian defense also played poorly, allowing the opponent to shoot 8 times in the first half. If Win Thein Zaw or Lwin Moe Aung had been more accurate in their shots, the Myanmar team could have opened the score.
In the second half, coach Shin Tae-yong made many changes, sending Asnawi and Rafael Struick onto the field. Indonesia changed their appearance, playing much better than in the first half. After many missed opportunities, in the 76th minute, captain Asnawi kicked extremely hard, the ball went hard and hit Myanmar goalkeeper Zin Nyi Nyi Aung and flew into the net. This was also the only goal of the match, helping Indonesia win all 3 points on the opening day.
After the match, coach Shin Tae-yong shared: “In any tournament, the opening match is difficult. More specifically, Indonesia has to play away against Myanmar - a team that I consider to have a very good squad and they played with all their might.
However, the Indonesian players did a lot today, far beyond what I expected. Indonesia played very well in the second half and deservedly won 3 points. This is a great joy for the players, making Indonesian fans proud. I thank the players for this."
On the opposite side, coach Myo Hlaing Win expressed regret that the Myanmar team could not take advantage of the opportunity and had to lose at home. He commented: "If talking about the way of playing, I am very happy with what the players showed. Myanmar always plays in their own style, having many opportunities in the first half. Unfortunately, the players wasted them and could not open the score. I think Myanmar was unlucky because we deserved to score. In the second half, the cruelest thing in football happened. We had to lose at home. However, Myanmar will quickly forget the defeat to prepare well for the match with the Philippines."
Meanwhile, Asnawi - who contributed greatly to the Indonesian team's goal - said: "We knew this was our first match and would face many difficulties, so we prepared very carefully. Coach Shin Tae-yong's tactics were followed by all the players. I think that was the biggest reason for this victory. At the same time, I thank all the players and the coaching staff for working hard today."
Notably, the goal that the Indonesian team scored against Myanmar came from a powerful throw-in by winger Pratama Arhan. Asnawi believes that this is a powerful “weapon” of the Indonesian team and his team will try to promote it at the AFF Cup 2024.
“When things get tough, Pratama Arhan’s throw-ins come in handy. We’ve practiced these situations many times and today we managed to score again. Surely Indonesian fans are happy that we got three points,” Asnawi stressed.
With a narrow win over Myanmar, Indonesia has the same 3 points as Vietnam. However, coach Shin Tae-yong and his team are temporarily ranked 2nd due to a goal difference behind Vietnam (Indonesia +1, Vietnam +3). In the next match, "Garuda" will return home to face Laos (December 12).
