The Vietnamese team defeated Singapore 2-0 in the first leg of the 2024 AFF Cup semi-final. Despite a 0-0 draw in the 90 minutes of regulation time, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team rose up in extra time to claim a precious victory.

In the 90+8 minute, Xuan Son put pressure on the Singapore defender, causing him to make a mistake by letting the ball touch his hand in the penalty area. At the 11m mark, Tien Linh successfully kicked the penalty to open the score. In the 90+14 minute, Xuan Son ended his brilliant day when he rushed in and finished close to the goal, sealing a 2-0 victory for Vietnam.

Coach Kim Sang-sik affirmed: "I want to thank the players for winning 2-0 against Singapore. Thank you to the fans for their endless support during the match at Jalan Besar. In this match, the players were not fully adapted to the weather and the pitch of Singapore. We had difficulty in the first half and improved in the second half thanks to good adaptation.

There were difficulties, but the Vietnamese team focused fully on the match, thanks to that we won this match. However, we have to be very careful before the second leg."

Before scoring two consecutive goals in the second half's extra time, the Vietnamese team was denied a super goal by the referee. In the 85th minute, Xuan Son controlled the ball and kicked a powerful shot that "burned the Singapore net". However, after consulting with VAR and reviewing the slow-motion replay, referee Ko Kyung-jin denied it because he thought Xuan Son let the ball touch his hand. For his reaction, Mr. Kim was given a yellow card.

Coach Kim Sang-sik confirmed that he would not comment on the referee's decision: "I have no right to comment on the situation, so there is not much to say about this decision. I regret Xuan Son's missed goal, but I have to respect the referee's decision. Even if the referee makes a decision that is not in our favor, the whole team will still focus on the match."

The Vietnamese team will face Singapore again in the second leg of the semi-final at 8pm on December 29. With a 2-goal advantage, Coach Kim and his team are close to the final. However, Coach Kim Sang-sik also emphasized that the team must not be complacent.

"I am satisfied that the defense kept a clean sheet against Singapore, who are strong in long balls and counter-attacks. We will work together to improve and prepare for the next matches," said coach Kim Sang-sik.

The Korean strategist also praised goalkeeper Dinh Trieu: "He is improving day by day by not conceding goals or making mistakes. Despite making mistakes in the first match, I think Dinh Trieu played well. Thank you coach Lee Won-jae for working well with the goalkeepers."
