Trade and cooperation opportunities with the Vietnamese market

This is the first time the Norwegian Seafood Council has participated in the annual VietFood & Beverage Hanoi 2023 fair. This important event once again emphasizes the Council's commitment to strengthening connections and promoting trade cooperation in the seafood sector between Norway and Vietnam.

Many leading Norwegian seafood businesses were present at the event.

This is also the first time that 8 leading Norwegian seafood producers and exporters, including Cape Fish, Coast, Leroy, Hofseth, Pure Norway Seafood, Salmar, Seaborn and Star Seafood, have come to Vietnam to directly participate in the activities of the Norwegian Seafood Council, promoting cooperation opportunities with potential partners in the Vietnamese market.

With many Norwegian seafood products such as red king crab, salmon, cod, brown crab, Atlantic mackerel and cold-water shrimp, the Norwegian Seafood Council's exhibition booth at VietFood & Beverage Hanoi 2023 has expanded two-way cooperation opportunities between Norwegian and Vietnamese businesses operating in the seafood sector.

Alongside the product display, the Norwegian Seafood Council hosted a “Salmon Academy” where attendees had the opportunity to witness renowned Singaporean chef Jimmy Chok conduct a fascinating culinary demonstration centered on Norwegian salmon. Chef Jimmy shared insights ranging from the historical background of this delicate seafood to essential techniques for handling salmon products, ensuring they are transported quickly from the supplier to the restaurant or retailer, thereby preserving the freshness of the salmon.

Chef Jimmy shared his insights into Norwegian salmon with the large crowd attending the event.

One of the highlights of the “Salmon Academy” is the sharing of Dr. Asbjørn Warvik Rørtveit, Regional Director for Southeast Asia of the Norwegian Seafood Council, with comprehensive in-depth content on the farming process of Norwegian salmon along with strict regulations and world-leading advanced technology that make Norwegian salmon have a unique delicious flavor.

“The Norwegian seafood industry is fundamentally committed to responsible development and maintaining the natural balance of our environment. Our goal is not only to provide Vietnamese consumers with high-quality and reliable seafood, but also to promote cooperation in protecting marine ecosystems, contributing to the long-term sustainability of the seafood industry,” he said.

The event is an opportunity for Vietnamese and Norwegian businesses to meet and promote trade activities.

“In the coming time, the Norwegian Seafood Council is committed to working closely with Vietnamese businesses to increase economic value, while maintaining the assurance that Norwegian seafood present in Vietnam always has a world-class origin and quality,” Mr. Asbjørn affirmed.

Vietnamese people "love" high quality Norwegian seafood

Ideal natural conditions, combined with sustainable management methods of marine resources and meticulous attention to every step of supply, have created a Norwegian seafood brand famous for its quality all over the world, including Vietnam.

The cold and harsh temperatures of the Norwegian Sea have fostered seafood with distinctive flavours and textures. At the same time, the secret of Norwegian fishing and aquaculture is a holistic ecosystem-based approach, combined with strict quality control regulations to protect every species in Norwegian waters. For the famous Norwegian salmon, the fish are raised in glass cages nearly 200 metres in diameter and 30-50 metres deep. The fish cages have an automated monitoring system in the control room on the boat, constantly checking the fish's water environment, water temperature, and currents.

Norwegian salmon is globally renowned for its quality and sustainability.

As the world's second largest seafood exporter, Norway supplies 40 million seafood meals daily to 150 countries around the world. In Southeast Asia, Vietnam is always the leading importer of Norwegian seafood in the region.

In September 2023, Norway exported 8,988 tons of seafood to Vietnam, an increase of 16% in volume compared to the same period last year. These exports were worth NOK 266 million (approximately USD 23.7 million), an impressive increase of 28% in value. Year-to-date statistics show that Vietnam has imported a total of 42,242 tons of seafood from Norway, worth NOK 1.6 billion (approximately USD 142 million), an increase of 8% in volume and 23% in value compared to the same period last year.

This shows that consumer demand is increasing, along with the population size and the increase in income of Vietnamese consumers.
